Do you enjoy reading, and have an interest in helping adult language learners practice English? This volunteer opportunity is for you! Catholic Charities Adult English language program is looking for book club leaders for small groups of beginner, intermediate and advanced adult language learners. Qualifications Bachelors degree or continuing education credits Experience with English language learners and/or teaching is preferred Ability to plan and facilitate three one hour book discussions with a small group Skills Needed Strong communication skills Flexibility Time management Cultural responsiveness and sensitivity Basice computer skills Responsibilities Read the book in advance (will be pre-selected and provided by Catholic Charities) and prepare discussion and comprehsion questions Help lead students through a discussion about the book and encourage participation from all attendees Create a warm and welcoming environment Keep a log of attendance after each meeting Communicate needs or concerns with the programs Volunteer Coordinator Time Commitment: Commit to three one hour meetings Location and Scheduling: Book clubs will take place on zoom or in-person at a public location on M. or F. mornings or evenings. Volunteers must be PA residents to apply, preferably Central PA. Catholic Charities serves immigrants and refugees from over 35 countries every year. Our classes meet on Zoom. Our class sizes have increased over the past year and we are in need of classroom aides to support lead ESL instructors on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays from 9:30-11:30 AM or 6-8 PM. If you are interested in connecting with us, please be sure to check your spam folder in your email for a follow up from us, as sometimes our company emails get automatically filtered as junk mail. Training, materials, and ongoing support for classroom aides is provided. Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree Experience working with English language learners preferred Fluency in the English language (no other languages required) Have an internet connection and computer that supports Zoom Responsibilities: Commit to at least 6 months of serving as a classroom aide with Catholic Charities Provide a caring and non-threatening environment for learners Maintain a consistent weekly schedule and inform lead instructor if unable to attend Skills Needed: Flexibility Patience Cultural Sensitivity Planning and Organizational Skills Interpersonal Skills Location and Scheduling: Classroom aides will meet with students and teachers on Zoom. Our classes are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with timeslots from 9:30 - 11:30 AM, and 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Our biggest volunteer needs are currently for our evening classes. Volunteers must be PA residents, preferably Central PA.

Catholic Charities serves immigrants and refugees from over 30 countries every year. We are in need of a volunteer receptionist to welcome current and walk-in clients. This is a great opportunity to support immigrants and refugees in Harrisburg, develop administrative skills, or utilize office skills developed in previous workplaces. The time commitment is one day a week during the hours of 9 am-5pm. The start and stop time is flexible. This is an in-person volunteer position located in our Harrisburg, PA office. Volunteers need to be within driving distance of the office. Orientation and training are provided. If interested please read below for additional information. Qualifications: Experience in an office environment is preferred. Ability to be in person at our office located in Harrisburg, PA. Bilingual or multilingual volunteers are especially encouraged to apply. Must be 18 or older. Responsibilities: Commit to volunteering in the office one day a week. Notify the Volunteer Coordinator of changes in your schedule. Welcome clients who are in need of assistance or attending an appointment at the office. Connect clients with necessary office personnel. Are you a creative person who enjoys developing digital content?! Catholic Charities Immigration and Refugee Services is looking for a social media volunteer to help educate and engage the community about our mission; helping immigrant and refugee families find safety, peace, and fulfillment. The time commitment will average about 1-2 hours a week, and the time of day is flexible. Currently have an instagram? Check out our page @ccimmigrationrefugeeservices. Read below for details. Qualifications Ability to use canva or other design software to create visually engaging posts for our instagram acccount that inform the community about our programs and iniatives. 18+ and have the ability to volunteer both onsite as needed and remotely. Responsibilties Creating a bi-weekly post for Catholic Charities ESL Instragram feed that will be sent to the Volunteer Coordinator for review. The Volunteer Coordinator will make the final post. Visiting or attending program events to capture photographs as the volunteer's schedule allows. Interviewing employees or clients to share program stories and perspectives. Skills Needed Creative Strong communication skills Abililty to work independently Flexible Photography Graphic Design Cultural responsiveness Location This position is primarily remote with the occasional invitation to attend in-person events on-site or in the Harrisburg area as the volunteers schedule allows. Description
Immigration and Refugee Services is a Catholic Charities program located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. We provide English as a Second Language Services to a ten county region including virtual classes, tutoring, and citizenship interview prep. Our Empowering Women for Success program provides workshops and monthly diaper and feminine product distribution in partnership with Healthy Steps Diaper bank. All services are offered free of charge to all individuals.
