Resettlement Support Volunteer (Des Moines)

It takes a community to welcome new arrivals to Iowa. We are stronger together! Much of our work with newly resettled individuals and families is led by LSI staff; however we need the support of volunteers to organize donations, set up apartments, and more. Because needs change weekly depending on arrivals, donations, when landlords release keys, etc, we send an update about once per week with upcoming shifts for volunteers to sign up for. Activities that don't require confidential client information, like organizing in-kind donations, can be done by anyone. Activities that do require client information or contact, like apartment set ups or driving clients, require a background check and orientation before starting.

ELL Classroom Volunteer

LSI supports newly arrived refugees to settle and integrate into the community, and English skills are essential to this goal. Volunteers meet with students starting at a pre-literate level to help them build their English fluency to navigate the community. Staff and experienced volunteers provide support in initial training and lesson planning. Classes meet Monday, Tuesday, and Wendesday from 10:30 to 12:30 at LSI's offices.

In-Home Child Care Literacy Volunteer

Volunteer will work with LSI staff to provide literacy education for women from the refugee community who have started in-home child care businesses. Volunteer will work children to demonstrate activities while staff explain to empower providers to incorporate literacy into their programs through modeling and education. Time commitment: Once a week visits for ten weeks

ELL Classroom Volunteer

LSI's Community Based English Language Learning program empowers immigrants and refugees with numerous accessible online and in-person English classes led by knowledgeable, compassionate teachers. Participants gain language and social skills along with cultural awareness that enable them to quickly gain employment, integrate, and thrive in their new communities. How Volunteers Help: Classroom volunteers assist the teacher in ensuring all students get the most out of class by helping with demonstrations, leading small group activities, working individually with students who need extra support, and more. Volunteers generally commit to one day/class per week for one session. Current class needs: Morning 9:30 am-12:00 pm class - Tuesday or Friday Afternoon 12:30-2:30pm class - Thursday

LSI serves people of all ages, genders, nationalities, religions, ethnicities, and sexual orientations and is affiliated with Lutheran Services in America and three Iowa synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
