All you need is genuine desire to help patients and their families, emotional maturity, ability to offer assurance and kindness without judgment, ability to listen with sensitivity and respect, flexibility to adapt to the changes in needs and background-check clearance. Full training is provided. Those who have recently lost a loved one are asked to wait a year before becoming volunteers. We are currently looking for someone to assist our bereavement coordinator once a week. This person would send letters and make phone calls to people in our bereavement program. He or she would work on mailings and make phone calls to anyone who might be interested in our grief support groups or our semiannual memorial service. We need someone very reliable who will come in 1-2 mornings or afternoons a week for 4 hours shifts. This would be an excellent opportunity for a ministry or social work student (or a retired minister or social worker). Our families need you!

Loyola Medicine Hospice is looking for compassionate people who are willing to volunteer for hospice patients and their families. Volunteers offer respite care so the caregivers of the patients can take a break (run errands, go out, worship, exercise, etc.) and/or provide companionship and friendship to the hospice patients themselves (talk, look at photos, play games, watch TV, read, and more). Patients are most often at their homes but can be at a skilled nursing facility or the hospital (most often Loyola Hospital in Maywood, possibly Gottleib Hospital or MacNeal). Our volunteers typically see patients once a week (for an hour or two) over the course of one to two months and then take a break for a few months. How often you volunteer is up to you. We work with any schedule. Some volunteers also do things in the office, where there is always a volunteer need. Training consists of a few hours of interactive training that can be done at your convenience. Application required (can be emailed). Loyola Medicine Hospice provides quality care for individuals diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and helps families through this difficult time. Our interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, health aides, chaplains, counselors and trained volunteers works together to provide comfort and care for patients in their homes throughout the Chicago area with a focus on quality of life. If you’re wondering if a volunteer position with Loyola Medicine Hospice is right for you, here are some of the common qualities our volunteers share: * Emotional maturity and confidence * A genuine desire to support patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families * The ability to offer assurance and kindness, without judgment * The ability to listen with sensitivity and respect * A willingness to give an average of four hours per week * Flexibility to adapt to the changes in the patient's/ familiy's needs * Willingness to undergo a background check, received flu vaccination, and complete training We ask that those who have recently lost a loved one wait a year before becoming a hospice volunteer. You are welcome to participate in our bereavement programs during this time. Patient care volunteers are needed to visit patients in their home. Office volunteers are needed to work on mailings and calls for the bereavement program. All volunteers must complete a training program. If you plan to work with patients you will also need to have a TB test done (or provide documentation that you have had a TB test done within the last 12 months). Loyola Medicine Hospice is looking for a few good people who are interested in being companions for those with a terminal illness. As a hospice volunteer you will sit with hospice patients and offer companionship in the form of conversation, playing games, sitting together and watching a movie, being present, and/or reading quietly to them. Sometimes just being there (so they aren't alone) is enough. Training takes place where it is most convenient for you. Full training is provided and lasts a few hours. Loyola Medicine Hospice needs people who are willing to sit with hospice patients and talk with them about their lives, their interests, or whatever else the patient wants to talk about. In some cases the caregivers or family may leave (for an hour or two) to pick up medication or run errands knowing that someone is still at home to look after their loved one. Most volunteers will see patients once a week for one or two hours until the patient is discharged from hospice. Some then go on to the next patient while others take a break. Loyola Medicine Hospice needs all kinds of people to serve as volunteers. Training is provided wherever it might be convenient for you. Volunteering can take place in patient homes, at the hospital, or at a skilled nursing facility. There are also plenty of opportunities to help out in the office.
