Description

The Be A Mentor Program pairs caring adult volunteers from the community with youth in one-to-one relationships. Mentors give of their time to be a friend, answering questions, and providing guidance. Mentors come from a variety of backgrounds and occupations and volunteer their personal time to be a caring friend to a youth. They serve as a role model, advocate, and resource. The purpose of the mentoring relationship is to help youth develop their full potential, both in and outside of the classroom.

The process of signing up is simple and generates several options in a short amount of time. Reading through the opportunities, I was excited to learn about how many efforts were available for people to get involved with.

Ryan Gray, as the Project Manager of Be a Mentor, does a fine job of welcoming the people who mentor the at risk boys and girls in the Bay Area. A good background in what being a mentor means is provided before a mentor is assigned a young person. Someone is always available to contact to assist with any problems that may be encountered. Being a mentor can be very rewarding. Befriending a young person who has not experienced a consistent, non-exploitative relationship with an adult can be extremely beneficial to the mentor and the young person. Be aware, you may enjoy this experience.

The two years I have been a mentor through Be-A-Mentor have been so rewarding. The training and support is amazing. They have offered many activities, suggestions, and opportunities to foster my relationship with my mentee. The impact mentors make on the lives of children is immeasurable. It can open them to a world of hope, friendship, and education as they work toward their full potential.

I have been a mentor with Be A Mentor for almost four years. I believe I have been a big help to my mentee and I have really enjoyed getting to know her. It has been challenging at times yet still rewarding. Be A Mentor has supported me with training, fun activities to participate in with my mentee, and meetings with other mentors so that we can discuss what works and our concerns. I definitely think that people should be mentors if they have time and a flexible personality. There is a huge need for mentors. The mentees appreciate the opportunity to have a mentor and the opportunity to develop additional skills.

Total waste of my time. I went through trainings, meetings and was accepted. Only to be passed to a High School teacher that said he did not really have any interested students and does not plan that a match will be made at all in his program and asked me to list what he could use to sell me to the students. Not sure why they recruited me through the program to not have any need or programs in my area. I was misinformed throughout the process and was disappointed to be treated as such when I am trying to do something right that was advertised as needed. I hear there are programs that work through them in Richmond. But, my experience was a waste of time.

I have lived in the Bay area all my life, there are 10 times the children today that need someone who will inspire them, let them know they are important and guide them to a better life, with my life experiences I have much to share and give to people who need just that one person to change their life.

This sounds like such a great opportunity! "It takes a village to raise a child." Youth today need positive adult forces in their life, as well as communities of other peers and adults who support them. YouthNoise.com is a great resource for ways to help mentor teens, get them inspired and involved in their communities, and share their stories to help others around the world.
