While we know a shelter can never compare to home, our in-kennel enrichment volunteers make our dogs' stay at BARCS a little more enjoyable. By preparing and distributing tasty treats and toys, you can help stimulate their minds and keep them busy and happy. Some examples of treats that we make for our canine buddies include frozen peanut butter kongs, frozen puzzle feeders, frozen ice buckets, pupcakes, dog donuts, snuffle mats, and more! We try to give a treat to every dog every afternoon - since BARCS usually has around 100 dogs in residence at any time, we're always making more enrichment treats! Help this important program by creating and prepare treats in the morning or late afternoon, and/or being every dog's BFF by giving out treats and toys around 2 p.m. on weeks days and around noon on weekends. Volunteers are the heart of BARCS. Without their time, talents and resources, we would not be able to save the lives of over 10,000 animals each year. Whether you have a free day on the weekend or an occasional hour after work, there is a place for you at BARCS. Join us today to help change an animal’s life forever. With your commitment and assistance, we will work together to make the organization successful in promoting animal welfare, providing lifesaving resources to our community, and giving shelter animals some much-needed love and attention.

Since 2005, BARCS has been hosting monthly low-cost vaccine and microchipping clinics to support underserved pet owners in Baltimore with compassionate support and vital resources. Each year, these clinics serve more than 3,000 owned pets whose families have limited income and are not able to afford a regular relationship with a veterinarian. Volunteers assist with registration/filling out paperwork, customer service, record keeping, animal handling, event setup and tear down, and more.

We need animal lovers like you to help us in our mission to safeguard, rescue, heal, adopt and advocate for animals while inspiring community action and compassion. At BARCS, volunteers are more than just a tremendous help to our mission--they are our lifeline and our family. BARCS is always holding fun events to help raise funds for our animal residents and help get animals adopted! A few of our fun events as examples: Pours for Paws Poorly Drawn Pet Portraits BARCS Crawl BARCS Crab Feast BARCS Bingo Paws at the Pointe Golf Tournament BARCStoberfest Dog Wedding Petco Pop-Ups Kitten Shower and so many more! We need volunteers who can help with nearly everything at our events (depending on the individual event): setup and teardown, registration/sign in, event prep, t-shirt/merch sales, and more! We're also looking at potentially adding an occasional Saturday booth at a Farmer's Market but would need volunteers to assist in set-up, running the booth, selling merch, and talking about our programs.

We need animal lovers like you to help us in our mission to safeguard, rescue, heal, adopt and advocate for animals while inspiring community action and compassion. At BARCS, volunteers are more than just a tremendous help to our mission--they are our lifeline and our family. Our volunteers help us care for the animals and operate our programs in a variety of different areas. Volunteers are the heart of BARCS. They help in countless ways - by walking dogs, socializing cats, providing enriching experience for animals, helping clean, assisting with adoptions, and so much more! We are seeking leaders who enjoy spending time with people as much as they love furry companions - volunteers who want to help lead volunteer orientations or train new volunteers on handling dogs and socializing cats. Volunteers interested in this opportunity will need to volunteer at least twelve hours in the shelter in the area in which they plan to train others in to ensure they feel fully comfortable answering questions about the shelter. This opportunity is great for student leaders or early career age folks who want to practice their leadership skills, or even for retirees with a wealth of experience who are confident speaking in small groups.

We can’t save the lives of animals in need without our supportive and loving fosters. These special people provide an invaluable, lifesaving gift for homeless cats, dogs and small companion animals. Fosters open their homes to care for sick and injured pets, animals having trouble adjusting to shelter life, pets who need work on their socialization skills, or those who simply need time to grow before being ready for adoption. Fostering saves the life of two animals: the one you welcome into your home and the life of the animal whose place it takes at our shelter. The more animals BARCS can take in, the more lives we can save. Fostering Requirements Your role is to welcome a pet (or pets) into your home and provide food, water, toys and lots of love. You must be 18 or older to foster. As a foster parent for BARCS, your responsibilities include: Monitoring your foster’s physical and mental wellbeing. Transporting to and from veterinary appointments and adoption events, as appropriate. Marketing your foster pet for adoption (if applicable).
