Food Pantry Volunteers needed at William Temple House William Temple House, in NW Portland, has openings for Food Pantry Client Services Volunteers (the currently available weekly shifts are: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from either 10am-12:30 pm or 12:30pm-3pm). Duties: Stock food pantry and supply center shelves with the assistance of other staff and volunteers. Maintain cleanliness and neatness of pantry area with the assistance of other staff and volunteers. Welcome clients and assist in the distribution of emergency food, hygiene items and other supplies to a diverse client population. Requirements: Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with fellow volunteers, staff, and occasionally challenging clients. Be able to lift and carry 25+lbs. Able to work on feet. This is a physical job. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail a must. Pass a criminal background check. Must be at least 18 years of age. Make a 2 month volunteer commitment. Department: Social Services Reports to: Social Services Program Manager Shift day/hours: Shifts are Fridays 10:30am-12:30pm. William Temple House in NW Portland is seeking a Food Pantry Gleaning Volunteer to assist our Social Services staff with weekly pickups of donated food and hygiene items from an Amazon warehouse. This volunteer position does not require driving, as the individual will go with a staff member in the WTH van to make pickups. *Social distance protocols with be followed while loading/unloading items. Masks will be worn at all times. Duties: ● Assist staff members with the pickup of donated items ● Help load and unload the donations in and out of the WTH van ● Sort and stock the donations upon returning to the food pantry. Job Requirements: This is a physical position that involves time spent in a warehouse and walk-in cooler/freezer. ● Able to lift and carry 50-75 lbs, including down a set of stairs. ● Able to work on your feet - this is a physical job. ● Willingness to use equipment to move the donations, including hand trucks, rolling carts, and pallet jacks (training can be provided). ● Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with fellow volunteers, staff, and partner agency representatives (donors). ● Pass a criminal background check. ● Desire to help reduce food waste and combat food insecurity in Portland. ● Be 18 years of age or older. The William Temple House Thrift Store seeks individuals and small groups (up to 3 people) to volunteer to assist Thrift Store shoppers and donors - and help us get donations to the sales floor. New volunteer positions include: Clothing Sorter and Hanger Shoe & Accessories Volunteer Linens Volunteer Clothing Sales Floor Volunteer Book Volunteer Art Volunteer Jewelry Volunteer Loading Dock and Donation Intake Volunteer Electronics Volunteer The William Temple House Thrift Store offers the community quality merchandise including furniture, clothing, jewelry, books, art and more. All profits from the store support the mental health counseling and social services offered at William Temple House. The ideal candidate has good people-skills, is able to work on varied projects concurrently, possesses good problem solving skills, and is able to maintain a positive attitude while working alone or with a diverse group of people. Plus, all volunteers who work 10 hours or more a month receive a $20% store discount on Thrift Store merchandise! Volunteer shifts take place during Thrift Store hours, Monday to Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sunday 11am-6pm. *The Thrift Store is closed the third Monday of every month for inventory and restocking. Scheduling is flexible, and 2+ hour shifts preferred. Note: Due to the nature of our store and donations we receive, volunteers may be exposed to dust or other allergens. Job Requirements: Able to lift minimum 25 lbs and work on feet for entire shift. This is a physical job. Be on time and work all scheduled shifts. Make a 3 month volunteer commitment. *Specialty Volunteers: We currently have need for 'Specialty Volunteers' - individuals that have a great deal of knowledge about a particular category of items, to volunteer on a regular or on-call basis (some areas may require a monthly commitment, but most categories would only be on-call). William Temple House is seeking volunteers to help at the Front Desk in the Social Services Department, at our NW Portland location. Front Desk Volunteers should be comfortable working with a diverse array of people from various ethnic, social, and religious backgrounds and be able to work with vulnerable clients. Food Pantry Client Services Volunteers performs the following duties : Assist and support the front desk staff person in greeting clients, directing clients, and answering questions. Assist with the client intake process, as needed. Assist clients with completing the 'Ready Bag’ food form. Help accept in-kind donations. Assist staff with the Food Pantry client lottery (to determine the order that clients can access the Food Pantry). Assist with running up/down stairs to bring bagged/boxed Food Pantry client orders from Food Pantry to Lobby. Help clients take food items to their cars. Job Requirements : Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with fellow volunteers, staff, and occasionally challenging clients. Respect confidentiality. William Temple House, located at 2023 NW Hoyt, operates a food pantry three times a week that serves several hundred people each month. In addition to food and hygiene items, we also distribute clothing to people who need it. Our clothing closet is in the basement of our building, directly adjacent to our food pantry. As our operations have grown, we have also seen an increased need for clothes from our clients. We are looking for volunteers to help find appropriate clothes and distribute them to people during pantry hours. The ideal volunteer for this position will be able to organize the clothing closet and work with clients to get them appropriate articles of clothing. Clients do not visit the clothing closet in person, so it is important that this volunteer is able to communicate effectively and find the right clothes for each person. When: Our clothing closet is open weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:00am-2:00pm. Ideally, we would have a Clothing Closet volunteer help each of those days from 11am to 2pm (a different volunteer each day). If there is a time that works for you that doesn’t fit in those hours, please let us know! We would still love to have you volunteer. Duties: Organize clothes by size and category in our clothing closet Fulfill client orders and needs in the clothing closet (clients do not visit the closet in person) Keep track of number of visits to the clothing closet and other minor administrative tasks Receive and sort clothing donations Communicate with clients about types of clothes, basic size questions, and other inquiries Requirements: Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with fellow volunteers, staff, and occasionally challenging clients. Be able to lift and carry 10+lbs. Able to work on feet. You will be lifting and carrying small handfuls of clothing. Staff will be available to help with any heavier lifting. Interest and ability to sort and fold clothing. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail a must. The closet is located in a small space, and strong organizational skills will be helpful to this position. Must be at least 18 years of age. We ask that volunteers make a 3 month commitment, and volunteer on a regular basis (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or in an 'on-call' capacity).
