Aid in the support of drop-in or presenter-led programming at multiple branches throughout Multnomah County. All equipment, software, and supplies are provided by the library and will be sent to the location in advance. There are also opportunities for volunteers to present programs on various topics. Time commitment: 3 hours per shift, 2-4 times per month, dates and frequency of events will vary. Events tend to be in the afternoons or evenings, occasionally on the weekends. Locations Midland Libr ary, 805 SE 122nd Ave, Portland, OR 97233 Holgate Library, 7905 SE Holgate Blvd, Portland, OR 97206 North Portland Library (winter 2024-2025), 512 N Killingsworth St, Portland, OR 97217 Other library locations in the future Age requirement: 16+ Available shift(s): varies, training/programs start in October and are ongoing after that Tasks and responsibilities Supporting audio and video specific presenter led programs by setting up AV equipment before events and putting everything away after the event Troubleshooting software and hardware issues during the program Provide a welcoming environment for patrons 1:1 patron support as needed Administering patron surveys and collecting participation data Research creative curriculum and projects, as needed for drop-in programs Skills and qualifications Experience with audio visual software: logic pro, ableton live, davinci resolve, adobe premiere rush Experience with or interest in learning audio hardware like midi controllers, preamps, speakers, guitars, bass and drum machines Experience with or interest in learning video cameras, lighting equipment, microphones Comfort working with youth and adults Ability to lift up to 20 lbs, stoop and bend throughout the event Ability to stand for up to 3 hours, but seating is available if needed Ability to pass a criminal record check if 18 years or older. Results of the records check will be reviewed on an individualized basis. A conviction is not an automatic bar to volunteering. Do you want to help adults reach their learning goals? Join us at Midland Library to partner with adults learning English, basic reading skills, or those who are studying for the GED! During a 2-hour drop-in tutoring session, volunteers meet with learners individually or in small groups. Study materials will be provided. Location: Midland Library, 805 SE 122nd Ave, Portland, OR 97233 Time commitment: One weekly shift for a minimum of 6 months. Drop-in tutoring sessions take place on Thursdays between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. Please note that this is a drop-in tutoring program, so attendance may vary. Your flexibility is appreciated, as your presence is valuable for learners who do attend. Currently recruiting for: Basic Literacy Tutors help adults who are learning to read in English, helping them develop foundational reading skills. Volunteers provide individualized tutoring sessions to adult learners, focusing on basic reading skills, from phonics to comprehension. ESOL Tutors help English language learners develop speaking and listening skills using learning activities. Tutors support adults in learning activities that pertain to their goals, such as developing reading comprehension skills, writing skills, learning vocabulary, etc. GED Tutors help adults studying for the GED test including math, language arts, social studies, and science sections. Volunteers review study materials brought in by learners, answer learner questions, and provide guidance on passing the GED test. Tasks & Responsibilities Engage learners using open-ended questions to determine their specific goals Monitor and document learners' progress, adjusting instruction methods as necessary to meet the learner's evolving needs Emphasize positive reinforcement and repetition to build learners' confidence and skill, understanding that progress may be slow but steady. Be well prepared and offer learning activities that are based on the interests of the learners; offer to review work that learners have completed independently. Foster a supportive, nonjudgmental learning environment where adults feel empowered to improve their literacy skills. Special Skills & Qualifications Fluency in written and spoken English Minimum 18 years or older Teaching or tutoring experience preferred but not required Empathy and a friendly demeanor Patience, flexibility, and creativity Commitment to help individuals reach personal educational goals Willingness to use a variety of methods to promote understanding with students Respects diversity and appreciates diverse learning abilities Ability to work as part of a team and to collaborate with other volunteers and staff Ability to pass a criminal record check. Preferred knowledge for Basic Literacy Tutoring: Background in teaching reading (through formal education or tutoring training) or self-taught with a strong understanding of basic literacy instruction. A commitment to using Structured Literacy in tutoring sessions. Preferred knowledge for ESOL Tutoring: Competency in TESOL methodology, vocabulary development, and computer-aided instruction. Knowledge of English language fundamentals, including pronunciation, parts of speech, noun and verb morphology, subject-verb agreement, and rules for basic verb tenses. Familiarity with writing conventions, such as coordination and subordination, sentence structure (fragments, comma splices, fused sentences), punctuation, and common spelling errors. Preferred knowledge for GED Tutoring: basic math, language arts, social studies, and science. Tech Help sessions involve working with people one-on-one and using a variety of devices. Empower patrons by improving their computer skills and their access to information. Currently recruiting: Central Library, 801 SW 10th Avenue, Portland, OR 97205 Time commitment: One weekly shift for a minimum of 6 months, starting in April. Available shifts: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Fridays during open hours Tasks & Responsibilities Help people use the Internet and assist with their email accounts Teach patron resources related to Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Home Office and other office productivity software Assist patrons with learning about personal electronic devices like e-readers, cell phones, laptop computers, tablets and various applications Help people use the library catalog and other library electronic resources Please note, we do not perform repairs or troubleshoot equipment problems or failures Skills & Qualifications Ability to fluently speak Mandarin. Enjoy teaching people new skills and problem-solving with others. Patience to work with novice computer/smartphone users. Proficient knowledge of basic computer & smartphone components, Internet, and email Proficient knowledge of computer software & smartphone apps, or the desire to learn it Ability to work independently Enjoy working with people with diverse educational, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds Excellent customer service skills Ability to work with older adults Age 18 or older Ability to pass a criminal record check. This is a teaching position; volunteers help the patron find information about using their mobile device or computer and talk them through the steps. The patron will then navigate through the steps themselves.
