United Way of Central Florida is seeking additional ReadingPals volunteers. ReadingPals is a statewide early literacy initiative that provides volunteer mentors for students who may need extra help. Volunteers interested in becoming a ReadingPal will receive training and get matched with Kindergarten children at one of the listed 15 schools selected by the potential volunteer. The volunteer will receive a binder of the lessons at the training. Kits with books and questions are located in the classroom for use with 2 students. Student sessions will be one on one and back to back for 30 minutes each equaling to 1 hour total weekly. Choose the day that best fits your schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. No teaching/tutoring experience is required - just a passion for encouraging literacy in your community's youth. Attire should be suitable for the classroom. All potential volunteers will need to be background screened through the FDLE at no cost and through Polk County Public Schools at a cost of $25 which is non-refundable. The ReadingPals early literacy initiative helps students establish a foundation for reading by improving vocabulary, listening skills, comprehension, and visual and auditory memory. Polk's Nature Discovery Center is seeking volunteers as site stewards to assist in landscaping or gardening, maintenance of the exterior and inspections, or assisting in the education station. Landscaping and Gardening Work in a large shade house to weed and propagate native plants Trim grass on the boardwalk Maintain landscape beds Maintain the outdoor classroom area Water, weeding, and planting Maintaining the Exterior Appearance and Inspecting Facility Pressure-wash and clean building exterior Create and maintain our outdoor classroom area Hike the trails and remove trash, debris, and report issues to staff Check buildings, barns, and shade house for issues with doors, lights, insects, etc. Maintain the tour tram's appearance Education Station Volunteer / Education Station Assistant Volunteer Assigned to stations along the trail to talk to visitors about wildlife and conservation Prepare and present educational programs to visitors Assist in leading field studies programs for 3-5 grade classes Research Assistant (Min Age 18) Monitor and research of Florida Species of focus at the time of volunteering Polk's Nature Discovery Center is located at the Circle B Bar Reserve. The free discovery center has exhibits specifically designed to engage and excite visitors of all ages. It is a place to explore Polk's water, wildlife, and wilderness and gain a better understanding of the delicate ecosystems of Central Florida. There are numerous hands-on indoor and outdoor exhibits, picnic facilities, and nature trails, making it a great choice for families.

Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine (LVIM) is seeking medical records volunteers. Medical records volunteers will manage patient charts in the computer for new and existing patients. Additionally, a volunteer in this position will review and organize paperwork for categorization and eligibility requirements, scan and file patient paperwork, distribute patient documents to the appropriate areas, assist patients in completing patient authorization for release of records, and handle phone messages. Medical records volunteers possess analytical thinking skills, accurate data entry skills, and proficiency in computer and phone use. Being detail oriented and organized is a must and volunteers must be comfortable working independently. Knowledge of medical terminology and experience with Intergy are helpful but not required. This position does involve excessive sitting time. LVIM is asking for a commitment of 3 months with a minimum of one shift per week either 8am-12pm or 12pm-4pm on any day Monday through Friday. Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine clinics are community based and provide free healthcare services to uninsured and medically underserved communities. LVIM is led by a few Watson Clinic physicians and the Watson Clinic Foundation and functions primarily by volunteers to meet the healthcare challenges of Lakeland's community in a different way.

The Lake Wales Arts Council is looking for dedicated hospitality volunteers with a passion for the arts to assist with greeting guests as they enter, offering and serving refreshments, and ensuring a welcoming atmosphere. These volunteers utilize excellent communication, customer service, and people skills to provide a positive experience at the Arts Center. Hospitality volunteers are one of the initial interactions with guests. Expected attire is business professional. No protective equipment is required at this time, but this opportunity does involve face-to-face interaction. This opportunity does require the ability to travel utilizing stairs and to lift 50 lbs. Volunteers will be scheduled as needed primarily on Friday or Saturday between 3pm and 8pm. Scheduling may be discussed during the interview. Polk County Fire Rescue's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks. CERT Team Leader. The first CERT member on the scene and designated Incident Commander (IC) until someone more competent arrives. Makes the initial scene assessment and determines the course of action. Assumes role of Safety Officer until role is assigned, assigns member roles, and designates triage and treatment area, morgue, and vehicle traffic routes. Coordinates and directs operations, determines logistical needs and ways to meet those needs through team members or citizen volunteers on scene, reports on the operation and victims, and communicates and coordinates with the IC, local authorities, and other CERT team leaders. Team leader is identified by two pieces of crossed tape on the hard hat. Safety Officer. Checks team members prior to deployment to ensure they're safe and equipped for the operation. Determines safe or unsafe working environments, ensures team accountability, supervises operations (when possible) where team members and victims are at direct physical risk, and alerts team members when unsafe conditions arise. Fire Suppression Team. Suppress small fires in designated work areas or as needed. May assist other teams as needed. Search and Rescue Team. Search for and provide rescue of victims as is prudent under the conditions. May assist other teams as needed. Medical Triage Team. Provide START triage for victims and mark victims with category of injury per the standard operating procedures. May assist other teams as needed. Medical Treatment Team. Provide medical treatment to victims. This task is normally accomplished in the Treatment Area, but may take place in the affected area. May assist other teams as needed. Polk County Fire Rescue provides Advanced Life Support transport to all residents and visitors of Polk County. It also provides fire suppression, rescue services and fire prevention services to all of unincorporated Polk County and the municipalities of Eagle Lake, Polk City, Mulberry, Lake Hamilton and Hillcrest Heights.
