The Queens Center for Gay Seniors in Jackson Heights serves the LGBTQ+ community and their allies through meaningful programming, healthy meals and a space for companionship. We have four virtual reality headsets with which participants can explore the VR world. The right volunteer will be available Tuesdays during the rest of the summer. We would like you to be able to jump into the office for a VR training sometime before the first scheduled date on the calendar, Tuesday August 15th. If you already have experience with VR and are excited about its application, you'll really be able to spread the wonder of this technology. The guide (you) will interface using an iPad. Tech savviness would be helpful.

Friendly Visiting is a social program for older adults. The program is funded by NYC Department of the Aging. The program matches volunteers with homebound seniors for weekly one hour visits. Our seniors live in Western, Southwest and Central Queens. These areas include: Long Island City, Jackson Heights, Astoria, Woodside, Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth Forest Hills, Rego Park, Corona, Elmhurst, Kew Gardens, Jamaica, Hollis, Ozone Park, Howard Beach and many more! Some examples of how volunteers can spend time with their matched senior are: chatting, playing games, looking at photo albums, watching TV, reading to your senior, etc. Friendly Visitors are responsible for: visiting the senior they are matched with for one hour every week for a minimum of 6 months. setting up and confirming their visit every week. reporting back to the Friendly Visiting office regarding number of visits each month. informing the program coordinator of any health changes or concerns with the senior’s living environment. maintaining good communication with the senior and giving as much advanced notice as possible if there’s a need to cancel or reschedule a visit.
