Water Quality Monitoring Crew

Flexible Schedule | Ellicott City, MD 21043

Join us as we find out the water quality of the Patapsco River within the Patapsco Heritage Area! We need volunteers to help take water samples at 4 locations 2 days a month (Monday and Tuesday) and help us take readings of various water quality standards. We need up to 5 volunteers each day, but would love to grow our volunteer crew!

Oella & Ellicott City Entrance Garden Volunteer

Participate in hands-in-the-dirt, pollinator gardening at the Oella & Ellicott City Entrance Garden. Weeding, pruning, fence repair, mulching and deadheading to spruce up and enhance this highly visible and popular riverside garden adjacent to Ellicott City bridge and Oella Ave, near Trolley Trail. We are looking for volunteers to "keep up" the garden throughout the year as they have time!

Stream Watcher

Adopt at least ¼ mile section of a stream or section of the Patapsco River Pick up litter along chosen stream/river section at least 4 times a year Monitor and identify problem areas Report on local stream/river section and any public health concerns to PHG and local officials Develop a baseline of all streams to compare/track any changes over a period of time Find locations in dire need of future group cleanups or potential watershed restoration projects!

The Patapsco Valley Heritage Area is one of Maryland’s 13 certified Heritage Areas. Heritage Areas are places to experience the authentic heritage of Maryland. In Heritage Areas individuals, businesses, non-profits and governments form partnerships to preserve the best of Maryland’s historic sites and towns, unspoiled natural landscapes and enduring traditions. Patapsco Valley Heritage Area programs are managed by the Patapsco Heritage Greenway and funded in part by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA), Howard County Government, and Baltimore County Government.

Patapsco Heritage Greenway is a small nonprofit based in Ellicott city, MD. We manage the Patapsco Valley Heritage Greenway, an area that encompasses both land in Patapsco Valley State Park as well as areas outside it. PHG is dedicated to providing both environmental and historical stewardship within the Patapsco Valley Heritage Area.
