Students in our area need help! You can become a volunteer tutor for adults or in-school youth in the Lapeer County Area. Help them reach their literacy and math goals to gain independence! We offer a free, tutor training. In-person tutor training is offered for one day, then volunteer tutors are required to completed approximately 5 hours of homework before they are placed with a student. Hours are flexible after training. Most volunteers work from 2 to 15 hours per week. Tutoring can occur in person or remotely. This is an opportunity to really help people change their lives! In our adult program: Most students have a goal of earning their GED. Tutors work with them to prepare for each of the four sections of the test (Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies). We also help basic literacy students who want to improve their reading skills. Additionally, we offer tutoring for English as a Second Language students. In our in-school tutoring program: We work with students who need support to be successful in school. This can be in reading and math. We want to keep these kids in school and help nurture a love of learning. For those with teaching experience: A shortened tutor training process is available for those with teaching credentials.

We are looking for help around the office. This could/would include answering phones, making calls, making copies, shredding papers, making coffee, and picking up around the office. You need to have a positive and friendly attitude. Hours are somewhat flexible but we prefer Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm. You do not have to work each of those days nor full days. We would love to have the extra help even for a few hours, one or two days a week. Must be able to interact in a positive way with many types of personalities. Our objective is to make our office warm and welcoming. If you might be able to help, please contact us!

Around our building, we have a small yard, flower beds, and a parking lot. They always need maintenance. This includes pulling weeds, moving flowers, planting, mulching, watering, trimming, edging, and even sweeping the lot to keep it tidy. This job can be done at flexible times. We would want to meet with you to go over what needs to be done. If you like being outside and would like to help make our building attractive and welcoming, we would love to talk to you. We would really like someone who can identify weeds and flowers and knows how to properly remove a weed. If you have your own tools and equipment, that would be excellent. We have some tools, but they are not the best.

We don't have a cleaning service and if you are good at cleaning, we could really use your help. Tasks to be done include, but are not limited to: vacuuming sweeping dusting cleaning bathroom mopping If you are able and willing, you could even clean carpets, wax floors, and other larger cleaning services. We really like our building to be clean and welcoming for our students, volunteers, and staff members.

This is a fun opportunity for you if you like to work with younger children and their parents. At these workshops and programs, families attend and participate in fun activities. You may read a book, play with Legos, sing songs, march, make a craft, hand out snacks, help kids pick out books, and much more. You have the chance to help parents make connections and have fun with their kids. You may also assist at child tutoring programs setting up, cleaning up, handing out books or snack and more. All volunteers must provide references and pass a background check. Volunteers with teaching, parenting, or childcare experience are encouraged to apply. Sessions are usually 60-180 minutes in length. Workshops are held throughout the year. We would love to talk to you!
