Volunteer ESL Classroom Assistant Are you looking for a way to connect in your community? Would you like to support adult refugees and immigrants who are improving their ability to speak, listen, read, and write English? Do you enjoy working with people of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds? Then this might be the perfect opportunity for you! Duties: Class assistants are partnered with a teacher who follows a curriculum and leads the class. Provide individualized attention to students during class time and help with large and small group activities. Demonstrate an interest in and willingness to learn about language development and English grammar. Work cooperatively with coordinators and other volunteers to meet the needs of the learners. Work cooperatively with learners of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds. Listen actively and encourage learner participation. Consistent attendance at a weekly shift from 10am to noon is required. Within 3 months of placement, volunteers must complete a 4-hour LitMN-sponsored, and State of MN compliant Foundations Training to be fully prepared to assist. Join us! No experience or diploma needed - we’ll provide all necessary training. English speakers of all levels are welcome and encouraged to volunteer. Must be 18 years old to volunteer. Ability to commit to 2-3 hours per week for at least 3 months required. Help your neighbors prepare for their GED and reach their educational goals! Volunteer as a pre-GED math tutor/co-teacher with the Open Door Learning Center - Minneapolis at least one day per week 10am-1pm on Tuesdays and / or Thursdays. Volunteers help learners develop skills and confidence in math or reading. You'll gain teaching experience while making a difference in the life of an adult learner. Volunteers are provided with a curriculum to follow and work with learners 1:1 or in small groups. Consistent attendance at a weekly shift from 10am to 1pm is required. ESL Assistant Teacher / Learning Coach Are you interested in leading small groups of ELL learners? Would you like to support adult immigrants and refugees who are improving their ability to speak, listen, read, and write English? Do you enjoy working with people of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds? Then this might be the perfect opportunity for you! Duties: Work under the direction and support of a staff teacher to support a group of adult English learners from diverse backgrounds. Work independently with small groups of learners (up to 9 students) on activities and curriculum provided by the teacher. Collaborate with the learners, teachers and other volunteers to create a learning community to meet the needs and goals of learners. Comfortable working semi-independently with groups of up to 9 students, with support and direction from a staff teacher. Consistent attendance at a weekly shift from 9am to noon is required. Within 3 months of placement, volunteers must complete a 12-hour LitMN-sponsored, and State of MN compliant Foundations Training to be fully prepared to teach. Duties: Provide lead instruction with another teacher for ELL classes of 5-12 adult learners. User friendly, low-prep, and easy-to-follow curriculum is provided by Literacy MN. Skilled at connecting with people of diverse races, ethnicities, and backgrounds Demonstrate an interest in and willingness to learn about language development and English grammar. Desire to work cooperatively to meet the needs of participants Teaching or tutoring experiences helpful but not required Consistent attendance at a weekly shift from 6-8pm is required.
