Can you listen? Can you be a compassionate friend? Can you hold a hand or give a hug? Can you offer up to four hours of your time to a family in need? Do you have a heart for the elderly or sick? Hospice patients and their caregivers need your help. It doesn't take much to touch a heart and change a life, and anyone with a compassionate heart and a few free hours once a week can help. Companionship is easy: We'll pair you up with a family who needs support. We'll help make a schedule that works for you and the family. And you'll help a family within 30 minutes of your location live better. Sit with the patient and listen to their story, or read to them, or play cards. The mental and emotional well-being of our hospice patients is extremely important to us, and volunteers are able to reach patients in a way medical staff just can't. Some patients live alone. Others with families, some are in our inpatient care unit, or another facility, like a nursing home, assisted living facility, or personal care home. Volunteer in the environment you feel most comfortable with, and know you'll have the training you need to be a good companion. Companions are like friends with training. You'll NEVER help with medical care like changing, feeding, or medicating patients. Companions are needed all over Atlanta (Barrow, Bartow, Butts, Carroll, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Heard, Henry, Jasper, Lamar, Meriwether, Morgan, Newton, Paulding, Pickens, Pike, Rockdale, Spalding, and Walton counties).

Caring for a terminally ill patient is a 24/7 job. This responsibility often falls to a loved one. An elderly spouse or child with children of their own. Sometimes to a sibling out of town, or sometimes even an elderly parent. The stresses of caring for a hospice patient are often intense and scary. Hospice provides these families with aides, nurses, doctors, chaplains, therapist, social workers, and all suplies, equipment, and medication straight to their doors. Hospice also provides relief in the form of volunteers who stay with the patient so that the caregiver can leave the house comfortably to do their grocery shopping, pay bills, get a hair cut, or even just go upstairs and take a nap. Caregiver Relief volunteers off up to four hours a week of their time with a patient. This time is usually spent talking, reading, playing games, or just being a kind presence while the caregiver takes time for themselves. Caregiver relief volunteers NEVER participate in medical care, so you will NEVER bathe, change, or medicate patients.
