Can you listen?
Can you be a compassionate freind?
Can you hold a hand or give a hug?
Can you offer up to four hours of your time to a family in need?
Do you have a heart for the elderly or sick?
Are you a veteran who wants to reach out to other veterans?
Hospice patients and their caregivers need your help. It doesn't take much to touch a heart and change a life, and anyone with a compassionate heart and a few free hours once a week can help. Our veteran patients need a special touch and we often find that they best connect with another veteran.
Companionship is easy: We'll pair you up with a veteran family who needs support. We'll help make a schedule that works for you and the family. And you'll help a family within 30 minutes of your location live better. Sit with the patient and listen to their story, or read to them, or play cards. The mental and emotional well-being of our hospice patients is extremely important to us, and volunteers are able to reach patients in a way medical staff just can't.
Some patients live alone. Others with families, some are in our inpatient care unit, or another facility, like a nursing home, assisted living facility, or personal care home. Volunteer in the enviornment you feel most comfortable with, and know you'll have the training you need to be a good companion.
Companions are like freinds with training. You'll NEVER help with medical care like changing, feeding, or medicating patients.
Veteran companions are needed all over the south side of Atlanta with a speical need for rural areas.
