Purpose/Description The Volunteer Coordinator position will support The Learning Center’s literacy project in recruiting and retaining volunteer tutors for adult learners in Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency, and English as a Second Language classes. The Learning Center serves adults from the North Lawndale and Little Village communities of Chicago. We believe adults can learn, have a right to quality education, and that education is liberating. Reports to: Executive Director and Program Coordinator Location: 2153 S. Millard Avenue, Chicago, IL 60623 Office hours: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM; Monday through Friday Hours: 35/week. Full-time. About LVI’s VOCAL AmeriCorps Program: LVI's current national service program, VOCAL AmeriCorps (Volunteer Outreach for Community Action in Literacy) places Full Time (1700 hour), Part Time (900 hour), Quarter Time (450 Hour) and Minimum Time (300 Hour) members serving in volunteer literacy programs throughout the state. Benefits: VOCAL AmeriCorps members earn a living allowance/stipend, an education award and a CSF bonus: $10,000 Living Allowance $3,697 Education Award Quarterly stipend just for joining totaling $1,350! Primary Responsibilities Manage recruitment efforts for volunteer tutors. Promote volunteering through publicity campaigns, strategies, and/or events. Ensure tutors are properly trained in adult literacy and placed into the appropriate classroom. Coordinate and schedule volunteer intake interviews and training sessions. Maintain schedule and coordination of all volunteers. Responsible for collecting and organizing all volunteer forms and applications. Maintain volunteer files and track/enter tutor hours into online database Maintain contact with volunteers to increase engagement and retention. Plan and organize volunteer appreciation events, including recognizing individual volunteer milestones such as birthdays and anniversaries. Serve as agency representative at community events and fairs to publicize volunteer opportunities. Plan tutoring sessions and provide small group and one-on-one literacy tutoring to adult learners. Conduct basic skills and literacy assessments. Track learner progress through regular assessments and submit reports. Assist students with employment-related services (i.e. job search, job applications, resume writing, etc.) Qualifications Ability to maintain confidentiality Proficient in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Proficient in social media Strong organizational skills Respectful and welcoming attitude Willing and competent to work with a diverse population Ability to multi-task calmly Excellent communication skills Experience in managing or coordinating projects Bilingual in English and Spanish (preferred) Applicants will be interviewed by both The Learning Center and LVI before being selected.

Benefits: VOCAL AmeriCorps members earn a living allowance/stipend and education award: Half Time: 900 hours; $9,000 Living Allowance; $3447 Education Award Quarter Time: 450 Hours; $4,500 Living Allowance; $1,824 Education Award Minimum Time: 300 hours; $3,000 Living Allowance; $1,459 Education Award WHAT YOU’LL DO As VOCAL AmeriCorps member, your service will focus on adult literacy programs offered to low-literate and limited English speaking adults and out-of-school teens. AmeriCorps members serve as one-to-one and small group tutors, become involved with volunteer recruitment and retention activities, and assist their partner organization in obtaining resources that will benefit the adults and families they serve. Primary responsibilities include: Literacy Support Plan tutoring sessions and provide small group and one-to-one literacy tutoring to low literate and limited English speaking adults and out-of-school teens. Conduct basic skills and literacy assessments for adult learners Encourage and support adult learners by helping them develop confidence and a positive attitude about learning; Respecting them and involving them in decisions about the learning process Select materials and approaches that are suitable for the adult learners’ ability and needs Track learner progress through regular assessments and submit reports. Volunteer Recruitment Assist with volunteer management including orientations, logistics, and volunteer tracking Work with Site Supervisor to ensure consistent, excellent volunteer experiences Assist with volunteer data management and individual volunteer coordination Recruit, schedule and coordinate individual volunteers Assist with communication projects aimed at volunteers (social media, newsletter, content development, etc.) Coordinate volunteer recognition activities. OTHER RESPONSBILITIES INCLUDE Engaging community members in education or social issues through member led themed events at their organization or sites across Chicago Attending Monthly trainings Participating in Days of Services Documenting your experience through videos and/or pictures Applicants will be interviewed by both the Host Site and LVI before being selected.

Position Summary: ScaleLit is seeking an energetic team member to fulfill the VOCAL role, the ideal candidate will have the following attributes: Provide can-do attitude and ability to oversee tasks from start to finish Exhibits ability to be collegial with peers in different community An interest in adult learning and workforce development Serve a minimum of 850 hours between September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2025 Maintain professional time management and communication skills.
