Volunteer at a City Harvest Repack!

Flexible Schedule | , NY 11232

When City Harvest was founded in 1982, it was run entirely by volunteers who connected a handful of neighborhood restaurants to food programs serving those in need. Now, over 40 years later, City Harvest volunteers remain a critical part of our food rescue operations. Whether you give your time at one of our nine Mobile Markets, rescue fresh produce at our Greenmarket Rescues, or come out to our Food Rescue Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn to repackage delicious produce into smaller mesh bags - your time and passion are important resources in the fight against hunger. We offer a wide variety of individual and group volunteer opportunities - including our Nutrition Education Program, Mobile Markets, Greenmarket Rescues. and Repacks. Please attend one of our Volunteer Orientation for information on our current opportunities. If you haven't volunteered with us before, please sign up for one of our New Volunteer Orientations held bi-monthly on Zoom.

Attend a Nutrition Education Orientation!

Flexible Schedule | Virtual Opportunity

You must have attended a volunteer orientation before signing up for a Nutrition Education training session. This training is mandatory who would like to volunteer with City Harvest Nutrition Education Programs. This interactive workshop prepares new nutrition education volunteers to lead our in person cooking demonstration and nutrition education courses. Volunteer roles include chef, nutritionist, and class assistant. During the session, City Harvest staff will model culinary and nutrition class activities from our courses, shopping tour, and cooking demonstration curriculum. City Harvest staff will also review how to teach basic knife skills and nutrition concepts. This mock session is a great opportunity for prospective volunteers to ask questions and discuss their own experiences prior to their first project.

Fight Hunger in Staten Island!

When City Harvest was founded in 1982, it was run entirely by volunteers who connected a handful of neighborhood restaurants to food programs serving those in need. Now, forty years later, City Harvest volunteers remain a critical part of our food rescue operations. Our Mobile Market on the North Shore of Staten Island are in high need of volunteers! Mobile Markets are bi-monthly farmer’s market-style distribution of fresh produce to residents of the neighborhoods. As a volunteer, you will help distribute thousands of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to over 400 families. Mobile Markets are a great opportunity to directly interact with the communities that City Harvest serves! The Stapleton Mobile Markets take place from 8:30 AM-12:00 PM, one weekday and one Saturday a month. Volunteers will be required to complete an orientation online for this opportunity!

City Harvest is New York City’s largest food rescue organization, helping to feed the nearly 1.2 million New Yorkers who are struggling to put meals on their tables. We will rescue more than 77 million pounds of food this year and deliver it, free of charge, to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, and other community partners across the five boroughs. Our programs empower individuals through nutrition education, increase our partners’ capacity, and strengthen the local food system, helping New Yorkers who are experiencing food insecurity to access, afford, and consume nutritious food.
