When City Harvest was founded in 1982, it was run entirely by volunteers who connected a handful of neighborhood restaurants to food programs serving those in need.
Now, over 40 years later, City Harvest volunteers remain a critical part of our food rescue operations. Whether you give your time at one of our nine Mobile Markets, rescue fresh produce at our Greenmarket Rescues, or come out to our Food Rescue Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn to repackage delicious produce into smaller mesh bags - your time and passion are important resources in the fight against hunger.
We offer a wide variety of individual and group volunteer opportunities - including our Nutrition Education Program, Mobile Markets, Greenmarket Rescues. and Repacks. Please attend one of our Volunteer Orientation for information on our current opportunities.
If you haven't volunteered with us before, please sign up for one of our New Volunteer Orientations held bi-monthly on Zoom.

Mission Statement
City Harvest exists to end hunger in communities throughout NYC. We do this through food rescue and distribution, education and other practical, innovative solutions.
Description
City Harvest is New York City’s largest food rescue organization, helping to feed the nearly 1.2 million New Yorkers who are struggling to put meals on their tables. We will rescue more than 77 million pounds of food this year and deliver it, free of charge, to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, and other community partners across the five boroughs. Our programs empower individuals through nutrition education, increase our partners’ capacity, and strengthen the local food system, helping New Yorkers who are experiencing food insecurity to access, afford, and consume nutritious food.
