Counties: San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Description: Manage media inquiries at assigned Red Cross service delivery site, including requests for client and/or volunteer interviews in coordination with the on-call PA officer. Respond on scene 24/7 to help provide PA support for incidents that meet PA triggers Greet the media, who are on-site covering the disaster, and provide them with timely, accurate information about Red Cross services being provided and available to victims. Excellent public speaking skills; strong writing skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Strong organizational skills and attention to details Access to cell/ mobile phone Valid driver’s license, access to personal vehicle and a good driving record The hours of commitment vary as disaster events are unpredictable and often happen in waves Media experience preferred Ideal for anyone: Opportunity to use communications expertise in service to a nonprofit organization Develop and practice media relations and public speaking skills Increase knowledge of Red Cross Ability to enter the DS HR system (the National Disaster Team) as a trained public affairs volunteer and travel to disaster relief operations beyond the chapter.

Every 8 minutes the American Red Cross responds to a disaster. Our Disaster Action Team (DAT) provide 24-hour emergency response to local disasters, such as home fires. We are looking for compassionate people to respond as soon as possible when the dispatch call comes in. DAT responders will: Go to the scene of a disaster to meet with and participate in the interview of those affected ("clients") Help clients feel that the Red Cross cares and can help them begin their recovery Provide access to resources for necessities (like lost medications, shelter, food, mental health and spiritual care support, and/or financial assistance, when eligible) Experiences you may be exposed to: Fire department activity Noise, water, smoke, smell, ash, etc. Possibly distraught clients Injured or hospitalized people or pets We encourage volunteers to sign up for at least 2 on-call shifts a month. Available in: San Mateo and Santa Clara county Meet with Latino communities within the chapter boundaries with a focus on increasing access, trust, and information while performing core community engagement activities: community meetings, neighborhood canvassing, neighborhood services, partnerships, and neighborhood recruitment. Share information about Red Cross services available to diverse groups through a preferred community language. Latino Engagement Team Members work with the chapter’s Community Disaster Program Manager and will coordinate with other disaster teams based out of the chapter (DAT, health, mental health, SAF, preparedness). * Requires cultural competency, knowledge of the Red Cross, and a willingness to be the face of the Red Cross in the community. DAT Duty Officers receive notification from clients and agencies requesting assistance during a fire, flood, or other disaster. They assess the situation and determine eligibility, then deploy the most appropriate resources to provide immediate assistance and damage assessment, initiate recovery planning and health and wellness services. The DAT Duty Officer ensures the response team has the tools, knowledge, and resources they need in order to deliver quality services, all while monitoring the situation and providing support from the comfort of their own home. We offer extensive training and mentorship from experienced volunteer leadership to set you up for success in this essential response role.
