Kaiser Permanente Hospice

Having been a caregiver myself and knowing what it is like I have a heart to help and relieve the caregiver. It is a heartwarming experience to help someone with their loved one at times like this. Kaiser Hospice is a great place to be as a volunteer.

I have worked directly with families who have a loved one on hospice, for 4 years now. This is an experience like no other. Being able to provide respite for family members who are the primary caregivers for a dying loved one is a gift of great love and compassion. The support you provide to a family going through this end of life experience is vital; while I have often heard it takes a special kind of person to do this kind of volunteering, I feel that facing the death of a loved one is a universal experience and we can all find ways to show compassion and provide support. My experience is working the clerical section of Hospice. The staff is exceptional and very thorough in their instructions. I am able to complete all assignments with little or no stress, and it is done with great joy, knowing I am needed, appreciated and making a difference.

I have volunteered with Kaiser Hospice for 16 years. I consider it the most enriching volunteer experience I have ever had. I have belonged to many organizations and volunteered with many groups. However, hospice is a very private and privileged experience between you and your patient. Each one has left me with a gift of living life in different ways. It is not a dreary experience but very uplifting, and you carry each experience with you for the rest of your life.
