Good Neighbors Needed! Deliver food to seniors in your community

Flexible Schedule | Pittsburgh, PA 15221

Seniors in your neighborhood need friendly volunteers to help get their pantry boxes or pick up groceries. Even if you are only available once or twice a month you can be a huge help to an older neighbor! Our program beneficiaries live throughout Allegheny county. Many pantries are open on weekdays, but a number have evening and weekend hours as well! Grocery pick-up and delivery can be completed any day of the week. Volunteers can choose what neighborhoods they'll help in or be assigned to those most in need. We will match you to the location and time that work best for you. We have opportunities to shop for someone and deliver their groceries, deliver meals, or help with curbside pickups at grocery stores across the county. Wesley Family Services is a social service and social care agency serving southwestern PA. Our volunteer-assisted services in the community are supported primarily by our funding partner: The United Way. We've been supporting seniors for over 25 years and are currently providing services with COVID-19 safety measures. This volunteer position is only open to residents of Pennsylvania. All volunteers must complete the PA Criminal History clearance (PATCH), which is free for volunteers. We are not able to accept volunteers who do not have a recent background check.

Drivers Needed! Give a lift to an older neighbor

Are you a safe driver with a car and a passenger seat to spare? Seniors in your neighborhood need help getting out and about! As we get older, most people limit or stop driving at some point due to health, mobility, or other issues. It takes a village for each of us to stay safe, healthy, and connected. You can be a lifeline to your older neighbors by helping with a ride to the doctor or the store! Volunteer drivers are needed throughout Allegheny County to provide rides to medical appointments, stores, and errands. Volunteers can choose what neighborhoods they'll help in or be assigned those most in need. We will match you to the location and time that work best for you. Even if you only have a few hours a month you can provide enormous support! Our greatest need is for drivers with weekday availability to assist with rides to medical appointments, and we also need drivers for help with shopping and errands on the weekends. Wesley Family Services is a social service and social care agency serving southwestern PA. Our volunteer-assisted services in the community are supported primarily by our funding partner: The United Way. We've been supporting seniors for over 25 years. This volunteer position is only open to residents of Pennsylvania. All volunteers must complete the PA Criminal History and Child Abuse clearances (Act 33/34 clearances), which are free for volunteers, as well as a 10-year PA Driving Record Check. We provide services to a vulnerable population and so are not able to accept volunteers who have not completed these background checks.

In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh (ISOS) and Open Your Heart to a Senior in Westmoreland County are programs of Wesley Family Services with a mission to maximize the independence of older adults in Allegheny County and Westmoreland County through practical volunteer-based supports.

Description

In Service of Seniors: Pittsburgh and Open Your Heart to a Senior (OYHS) are part of an initiative of the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Seniors who need some extra support to live independently at home and feel connected to their community are matched with volunteers in their neighborhood.

Volunteers are able to have flexible/self-service scheduling which allows volunteers to view and select activities that they would like to do. Some of the activities available are grocery shopping for or with an older adult, providing rides to appointments, friendly visiting, helping a senior with low vision read their mail, and more! Some of our opportunities are suspended at this time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Please contact us for a current list of available opportunities.

In Allegheny County, we also offer Medicare counseling through our APPRISE program and home safety checks for seniors through the Safety for Seniors program.
