Food is a basic need, and thousands of families in our community are hungry for help. The Foodbank depends on fundraising events throughout the year to fill our shelves with nutritious food items so that we can provide nourishment to help families across the Greater Peninsula who struggle with hunger live a brighter and healthier life. There are three ways that you can help: - Collect non-perishable food items and/or, - Collect monetary donations, - Have a special event with proceeds benefiting the food bank. A great way to give is to coordinate a food drive at your church, local grocery store, school, business, in your neighborhood to collect food and monetary donation in support of our local hunger relief efforts. Your efforts to coordinate a food and fund drive or a fundraising event makes an enormous difference in the amount of nutritious food that we are able to distribute in our community, transforming lives for those in need. Virginia Peninsula Foodbank provides food assistance to children, seniors, hardworking individuals and veterans living in the cities and counties of Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, James City, Gloucester, Mathews, Poquoson, Surry and York. A toolkit with helpful hints and a list of the most needed items will be provided. Food will need to be delivered to the Foodbank upon completion of the food drive. Mobile Food Pantries--A Great Way to Get Involved What are they? Our Mobile Food Pantry Program takes food directly to over 30 community sites each month, including schools, community centers, churches, senior apartment complexes, and our local VA Medical Center in Newport News and Hampton. We bring USDA/TEFAP commodities, shelf-stable goods, and fresh produce to families, seniors, and veterans so that they will have food to sustain them when their resources are low. How can you help? We need individuals, civic and church groups, and businesses to provide 3-4 volunteer hours at pantry sites to help set up the event, register attendees, distribute food items, assist attendees with transporting food items to their vehicles or residence (on site), and clean up afterwards. What is involved? Our distributions are held each month on a recurring monthly schedule. A Foodbank representative is on site to supervise and coordinate the event. Whether you’re interested in supporting a mobile food pantry once, quarterly, or wish to make a long-term commitment, we’re able to work with you. What Will You Gain? You will see first-hand the faces of our neighbors in need that we assist, representing all walks of life and all ages. Many people don't realize how blessed they are to be able to stop grocery store at any time and purchase food. You are making a difference in our community and helping the Foodbank. What is the next step? Visit https://hrfoodbank.volunteerhub.com/ for our volunteer opportunities. These events are reoccurring and the website will be updated to reflect the new dates available for registering as an individual or a group.

The Food For Kids Backpack Program was implemented through partnerships with Title I elementary schools (defined as schools with a population of greater than 50% of the children receiving free or reduced price federal school meals). One in six children are at risk of hunger. Weekly, the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank provides nutritious bags of food for over 1,500 children. Volunteers are needed to pack bags of food with kid friendly, yet nutritious food items for the children to take home on the weekends. Packing 100-200 bags of food will be benefical to the foodbank. This is a great group volunteer project. What is the next step? Visit https://hrfoodbank.volunteerhub.com/ for our volunteer opportunities.
