Choose your own adventure with the PNA’s trail-blazing efforts to create a dementia-friendly community! The Greenwood Senior Center (GSC), a program of the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA), offers a wealth of programming to support people experiencing memory loss and their care partners. Activities are typically weekly, and include Song Circle (Mondays) Zoo Walk (Tuesdays or Thursdays) Gathering Place, a whole-body enrichment class for people experiencing early stage memory loss (Thursdays) Memory Cafe, a celebration of now through music, art and other activities (Fridays) and more! We are looking for volunteers interested in working with people experiencing memory loss. Volunteers can choose to commit to a weekly Zoo Walk, or as a sub who rotates between several activities. Time committment is generally 2-4 hours per week, with some flexibility for the sub position; year-long commitment requested. Activities at the Greenwood Senior Center, Phinney Center and Woodland Park Zoo (all in NW Seattle, in the Phinney-Greenwood neighborhood), and accessible by bus. Volunteer application, background check and confidentiality form required.

Join the PNA's team of weekly zoo walk volunteers! The PNA is excited to provide this very popular program supporting people with memory loss and their care partners, and are looking to add another group on Tuesdays (and later Thursdays). Volunteers meet at the Woodland Park Zoo gate, help check in the walk participants, and then stroll with them for through the zoo (different route every time) for 45-60 minutes. Afterward, the group typically has coffee/hot chocolate at the zoo café for continued fellowship. Typically, 10-12 pairs of walking participants each week, supported by a team of 4-6 volunteers. Zoo admission and parking fees covered. Tuesdays from 9-11:30AM (Thursdays from 9-11:30AM in the coming months). The ideal volunteers are interested in engaging with seniors and have the ability to stroll/move comfortably through the Woodland Park Zoo. Volunteers will need to complete a PNA volunteer application, pass a background check, and meet with our Memory Loss staff prior to the first shift. On-site training by experienced volunteers provided.

Volunteers needed to help members one-on-one with their smart phones, tablets, laptops or eReaders. Questions are usually pretty basic: how to attach a photo to an email, how to set up an Instagram account, how to follow the Pope on Twitter, etc. Flexible schedule (you pick a mutually convenient time). Background check required & 6-month commitment requested. Great for high school students looking for an ongoing position. Mentors typically meet "clients" in-person at the Greenwood Senior Center (M-F, 9:30AM to 4:30PM), or at the Phinney Center (M-F, 9AM to 8PM, or Sat 9AM to 4PM). If you are interested in this opportunity for service hours, this is a great direct-service, intergenerational, opportunity. We’ve found volunteers are most successful when they are able to make a longer-termed commitment (6+ months) in order to accumulate the number of required hours. To give you an idea of how many hours you might get, we generally get 8 to 10 requests for help per month, and currently have a pool of about 15 volunteers.
