Can you offer another Manatee County adult an hour a week to help them to read, write, or speak English? *over 36 million adults in the U.S. can't read, write, or do basic math over a 3rd-grade level. *low literacy costs the U.S. over $225 billion in non-productivity in the workforce, crime, and loss of tax revenue. *kids with low literate parents have a 72% chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves - putting them at greater risk for poor grades and higher drop-out rates. *43% of adults with the lowest levels live in poverty. *75% of state prison inmates did not complete high school. *one in every five residents of Manatee county is considered to be low literate. That's bad news. Here's the Good News! We are looking for some great folks to help us improve adult literacy skills in Manatee County by providing FREE literacy classes. When you help adults reach their educational goals, you help their families-and our community-grow stronger. Adults throughout Manatee County want and need to learn to read and write better or learn English as a second language. Virtual Opportunity
Want to make a difference by teaching someone how to read, write, and speak English? We have virtual opportunities available today! We hold 5 virtual "Confident Conversations" classes for Adult English Language learners every week. We always need help in the Zoom breakout rooms to work with small groups of adults. Call or email us for more information on how you can make a difference in just one hour a week! You can attend classes when convenient. We currently host classes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:30 to 11:45; Thursday evenings from 6-7:30 pm, and Saturday mornings at 8:30 am. Other times may be available. You don't need to speak a 2nd language or a background in education - just a desire to help another person improve their English speaking ability. Look no further! Manatee Literacy Council has been teaching adults to read, write, and speak English for over 40 years in Manatee County. Literacy is the road to helping everyone reach their potential. Our mission is to empower Manatee County residents to independence through literacy. We do that through One-on-one tutoring Virtual "Confident Conversation" classes In-person ESL Classes Our tutors receive training and ongoing support. You don't need any experience in teaching - just a willingness to help another adult!
