Urgent need for volunteer to complete free training with company to assist hospice patient in Walnut Cove NC with companionship visits. Client does know some english but is embarrased to speak it much. She is fluent in spanish. Her son can translate and we also have a translation service if needed but would be great to find someone who is bilingual and could speak openly with her. This particular opportunity is for companionship and may include giving her a snack from kitchen or a drink of water if needed. Her son may step away for a break at times as well so this would also allow him some respite time. Other opportunities available in area and other areas as well. Feeding Female-Companionship-Respite

Patient in Mocksville NC needs commitement for 1-3 days per week for feeding a meal between 3:30 and 4:30 pm. Can stay longer if wish to visit more. Patient enjoys eating but is unable to feed hold utensil to feed self. Caregiver will bring the food to you and you just say you have a bite ready and patient will open mouth, chew and swallow with no problem. Patient likes being read to and listening to music as well. She can speak some and does appear to know what is being said around her. She can answer yes/no questions and also say she remembers something if she remembers it. If interested, more information can be given once volunteering due to HIPPA.

This gentleman is very sweet, able to walk and has a very sharp mind still as well. He is very lonely since his wife passed away and has no close relatives or family. He would love for someone to be able to come visit with him and just have conversation and he is very good at talking. This volunteer would have a great time and be very much appreciated. He is a veteran as well. He has lots of stories to talk about. He said before his wife passed away, she couldn't talk but he could talk to her and he is very lonely now that he has no one to talk with.

Companionship/Respite Visit with Hospice patient

Female hospice patient living in Advance NC needs a volunteer to sit and talk with her. She enjoys talking about her past and about planting flowers. She loves to give advice as this gives her a feeling of self worth. Her caregiver would like a 1.5-2 hour visit on Thursdays at 10:30 am to allow her to go pick up groceries and to pick up lunch for the patient at her favorite resturant. Patient is able to walk with a walker and able to feed herself. Sometimes she just isn't in the mood to talk but caregiver would still like someone to sit with her so that she is not left unsupervised. She has dementia but does remember her past well and enjoys talking about her childhood memories and memories from work. Volunteers with us do not provide hands on patient care but more of a friend relationship.

We have several opportunities in Advance and Surrouding towns for patient's who need companionship. You would go to their home (drive time to and from is counted), visit with them, listen to them talk about their life and experiences, engage them with open ended questions such as what was your favorite vacation, how many children do you have, etc. Some like to be read to or listen to music. etc. Some times people just need something to look forward to when they can no longer leave home.
