Fairfield County Parks is constantly battling to maintain native plants in our parks. Native plants are important in providing habitats for wildlife, and in not crowding out other native plants growing in the area. If you care about helping wildlife or just like being outside off trail you may be a good match for this! Potential activities may include, but are not limited to: Manually removing by pulling, sawing, or clipping plants. Dragging cut shrubs off trail. Pruning plants back from trails. Walking off-trail. There are no qualifications necessary to become a Natural Resources Aid aside from possessing a great attitude, passion for the outdoors, and a willingness to get down and dirty outside. Training on plant ID will be provided to interested volunteers. Volunteers may be exposed to inclement weather, biting insects, noxious plants, and other risks associated with being in an outdoor setting. All Fairfield County Park District volunteers are subject to a background check prior to beginning volunteer activities. The Fairfield County Park District open's its nature center on Fridays and Saturdays as well as providing free programs and events throughout the year. These programs may be educational, recreational, artistic, or just for enjoying the outdoors and may take place at any of our 14 unique locations. Whether you enjoy hiking, teaching, making art, history, or otherwise engaging the public in a shared love for nature, becoming Nature Center and Programs Assistant may be the perfect fit! General activities may include, but are not limited to: Opening and closing the nature center Greeting visitors and sharing information Program/event set up Helping with crafts and hikes Assisting with school field trips Organizing educational materials and supplies There are no qualifications necessary to become an Nature Center and Programs Assistant aside from possessing a great attitude and enjoyment of sharing a knowledge of nature with program attendees and visitors of all ages. The historic Rock Mill is one of the most popular and celebrated features of the Fairfield County Park District. Set in a picturesque location atop a sandstone gorge along the Hocking River, this working grist mill is open seasonally for tours on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the months of May through October with period-accurate milling taking place the final Sunday of each month during the season. Greeters are vital to assisting staff with monitoring visitor access, providing mill and site information, enhancing visitors’ experiences, and if interested operating various milling equipment. General activities may include, but are not limited to: Opening and preparing mill for operation Operation of milling equipment Ensuring visitor safety in the gorge and around moving parts Sharing knowledge about the site and milling process Assisting with cleanup and shut down of the mill Maintenance of the mill and surrounding property There are no qualifications necessary to become a Greeter at Rock Mill aside from possessing a great attitude and enjoyment of sharing a knowledge of the mill’s history and processes with visitors of all ages. Volunteers may be exposed to inclement weather, biting insects, noxious plants, and other risks associated with being in an outdoor setting and depending on jobs you sign up for may be located near large moving parts of the mill. Mission Statement
The purpose of Fairfield County Park District (Fairfield County Parks) is "to protect and conserve natural and historical features of Fairfield County and inspire outdoor exploration".
Description
Founded in 1981, Fairfield County Park District now operates more than 1,177 acres of natural areas and open spaces for education, recreation and conservation, and preserves and maintains many historical features.
Fairfield County Park District is a separate political subdivision of the State of Ohio organized under Ohio Revised Code, Chapter 1545, to "acquire lands either within or without the park district for conversion into forest reserves and for the conservation of the natural resources of the state, including streams, lakes, submerged lands, and swamplands, and to those ends may create parks, parkways, forest reservations, and other reservations and afforest, develop, improve, protect, and promote the use of the same in such manner as the board deems conducive to the general welfare."
