LOCATION: Union, Essex, Morris, Passaic, Hudson Counties NJ START DATE: October 2024 END DATE: Week of February 16th, 2025 DURATION: 90 Minutes Twice a Week for 16 Weeks including Training BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. In Elizabeth, the IRC resettles newly arrived refugee families and distributes assistance to eligible humanitarian parolees residing in Union and Somerset counties. The Youth Program at IRC Elizabeth seeks to alleviate systemic and educational barriers by providing school enrollment services, case management and youth-focused programming to forcibly displaced youth in the community. SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: The IRC in New Jersey seeks volunteer tutors to support English language learners among newcomer refugee youth who have been settled in New Jersey for nearly 6 months within Union, Essex, Morris, Passaic, and Hudson Counties starting the FIRST WEEK OF NOVEMBER. Volunteers will work with refugee youth individually WITHIN THE HOME to improve English language aquisition/learning. Tutors are academic coaches and positive role models who want to help IRC youth succeed in school. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Training & Learning Responsibilities: Attend an onsite orientation and training at the IRC Elizabeth office and complete associated IRC online training, surveys, and background check. Skills & Service Responsibilities: Individualized in-home tutoring. Tutors should be able to create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among student tutees. Interact with diverse populations effectively. Tutor works with assigned tutees for an hour twice a week for the duration of 14 consecutive weeks. Perform/administer knowledge checks/assessments with assigned tutee. Utilizing interpretation services when needed. Accountability & Responsibilities: Communicate regularly with the Youth Program Specialist, Youth Program Supervisor, and parents/guardians regarding the tutees progress, tutor support, challenges, etc. Comply with office policies and program procedures. DEMONSTRATED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES: Proven ability to build community within individualized sessions and cultivate the tutees commitment to academic learning. Thorough, detailed knowledge and understanding of English grammar with the ability to clearly explain all verbs, tenses, and parts of speech. Ability to interact with diverse populations and empathize with people unfamiliar with local culture. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a multicultural environment. Ethical and professional conduct that facilitates the building of a respectful, trusting, and collaborative relationship with program staff and tutees. Passionate about helping tutees accomplish established learning goals/objectives. Demonstrate flexibility, patience, critical thinking/problem solving skills, as well as active listening skills. Committed, dependable, and punctual. Creative - has a sense of fun! Competent technological abilities to use programs such as Google Forms, virtual educational materials/sites effectively, and Google Translate. Culturally competent while comfortable and aware of supporting the tutees needs. Proficiency in a second language preferred: Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Spanish, and/or Swahili. REQUIREMENTS: Have reliable transportation to and from the assigned tutees home twice a week for 14 consecutive weeks and rescheduling when necessary. Attend all dates of the required orientation/training - Projected for the first two weeks of October. Complete Salesforce Application and pass a background check. Sign all policy paperwork. Attend virtual individual support hours with Youth Program Staff Submit tutor logs weekly for 14 consecutive weeks.

TITLE: Youth Programming Intern LOCATION: Elizabeth, New Jersey DURATION: 15-20 hours a week in person for 5 months BACKGROUND: International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in more than 40 countries and over 20 U.S. cities, the IRC provides resettlement, education, and empowerment support to refugees and displaced people. Over the past eight years, the Refugee Youth Program at IRC NJ has developed partnerships with Union, Essex, and Hudson County public schools, community-based organizations, and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New Jersey. The Refugee Youth Program provides year-round programming working directly with refugee youth, their parents and families, and their schools. SCOPE OF WORK: The goal of the youth programs is to help recently arrived refugee and immigrant children, and youth adapt successfully to elementary, middle, and high schools and prepare for college, career, and beyond while meeting their short and long-term educational needs and supporting refugee youth’s social-emotional well-being and English language development. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Youth Education Programs at the IRC in Elizabeth support newly arrived refugee and immigrant youth, their families, and their schools with the school adjustment process and preparation for college and beyond. Refugee Youth Program Interns will assist with a variety of support services and programs. The Youth Program Intern will assist the Youth Program Specialist with parent/student outreach, program design and implementation for afterschool programming such as Youth Mentoring, youth workshops, Empower Tutoring, Teen Service Days, and the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA). Youth Program Interns will also provide related support services to youth and their families as needed. Under the supervision of and with the support from the Youth Program Specialist, Interns will: - Provide or secure interpretation services as needed to inform students and parents about youth programming details and related information. - Input casenotes into IRC platforms. - Create and translate flyers for youth programs. - Translate flyers and documents needed for youth programs. - Assist staff in welcoming, accompanying, and supporting students at after school youth programs. - Participate in staff development and team meetings and workshops. - Under the supervision of the Youth Program Specialist, assess and monitor family needs and make appropriate referrals. - Complete related tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Youth Program Specialist. Requirements: - Currently pursuing a Bachelor or Master Degree in Social Work, education, public health, or related fields. - Experience working with children and youth along with parents specifically in the context of educational and social programs. - Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations is highly desirable. - Fluency in a second language preferred (i.e., Spanish, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Farsi, Kiswahili, Haitian Creole and French - Ability to work independently and collaboratively. - Shows empathy, patience, cooperation, and interpersonal skills while working as a team and working with clients. - Understand the need to approach and apply case management methods with the goal of client self-sufficiency and sustainability. - Availability to commit 15-20 hours a week in person (2 days in person). TITLE: Services for Older Refugees (SOR) Intern DURATION: 4 months, early/mid January to early/mid May LOCATION: Elizabeth, New Jersey BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in more than 40 countries and over 20 U.S. cities, the IRC provides resettlement, education and empowerment support to refugees and displaced people. SCOPE OF WORK: The Services for Older Refugees (SOR) Intern will work under the supervision of the SOR Caseworker to provide trauma-informed services to elder refugees, asylees and other humanitarian entrants to support their integration, independence and well being. The Services for Older Refugees program is part of IRC’s Refugee Support Services which offers case management support to the elder newcomer population aged 60 years and older. The internship includes opportunities for direct engagement with clients to connect them to services both within the IRC and externally in accordance with client eligibility and program requirements. This internship is unpaid and requires a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week. The hours may be completed either virtually or through a combination of in person and virtual time. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Assist the SOR Caseworker to conduct new client intakes to assess needs and develop and implement self-sufficiency action plans over agreed timeframes with each client. * Assist the SOR Caseworker to provide individualized case management support to each client through direct services, referrals, and advocacy. * Conduct outreach calls to clients to monitor progress, understand challenges and ensure available resources are utilized. * Assist with scheduling client intakes and appointments. * Assist in documenting all client interactions in internal database and tracking tools in accordance with program requirements. * Assist with interpretation for the SOR Caseworker, as needed. * Other related duties as assigned. Job Description Resettlement is at the heart of the IRC’s work with refugees. Services provided meet refugees’ basic needs for food, shelter and legal rights in the early, critical stages of the long-term resettlement process. All activities lay the foundation for clients to become self-sufficient and contribute positively to their new community. The Youth Education Interns will assist the Youth Education department in supporting refugee and asylee children, and meet their short-term and long-term education goals. Please note that this is an unpaid position. This is a hybrid position, with opportunities to be online and in-person. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate intern to join our team as a Youth Education and Tutoring Intern. In this role, you will work closely with our Youth Education Specialists, School Success Specialists, and other interns to support the educational needs of newly arrived youth. This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with refugee populations and to learn about the refugee experience as it pertains to education and English language development. General Responsibilities: Assist in organizing and facilitating after-school tutoring and academic support programming to refugee youth, focusing on areas such as English language skills, math, and other subjects as needed. You are required to attend and facilitate at least 3 tutoring sessions per week. Tutoring sessions are held after K-12 school hours from 4:00PM - 6:30PM Tuesday-Friday, and hybrid sessions Saturdays from 11:00AM - 1:00PM. You are expected to be available on Saturdays from 10:00AM - 3:00PM in-person at the IRC office for tutoring sessions and community events that day. This is included in your 3 sessions per week. Track and document all activities related to youth education and tutoring in the appropriate internal database system. Facilitate one Professional Development session for staff and volunteers. There are 7 intern positions available for 4 different roles under the Youth Education Intern title. All Youth Education Interns are still expected to fulfill all outlined responsibilities in this section. These roles will be decided once all interns are onboarded.
