Digging deeper into Red Hill’s history requires some extra hands, which is why we have volunteer opportunities open to anyone interested in participating in archaeology! During the summer, volunteers help with excavation, while in the winter, they assist with artifact processing. Equipment and guidance from archaeologists are provided. Whether you come dig with us for a single day or volunteer on a weekly basis, you’ll have the chance to engage hands-on with history and help uncover more of Red Hill’s story. All ages are welcome, no experience required. Patrick Henry's Red Hill boasts a museum collection with over 3,000 artifacts and twelve historic structures. These artifacts require the help of enthusiastic volunteers to assist in their preservation and documentation. Collections volunteers will work with the director of collections to assist with: Collection storage inventory Artifact research and processing Maintenance of artifacts on display Imputing data into the collection management system Photographing artifacts No experience is necessary, but an interest in history, museums, and curatorial work is preferred. With fourteen buildings and over 1,000 acres to care for, Red Hill is always in need of volunteers who aren’t afraid to work with their hands. We are looking for a hearth cook who would love to share their talent and skills with school-age children and adult visitors to Patrick Henry’s Red Hill. Red Hill is Patrick Henry’s last home and burial place, located in the heart of Southside Virginia. Responsibilities include demonstrating hearth cooking skills during our Living History field trips and allowing children hands-on experience with a historical trade. You would also be asked to demonstrate hearth cooking during our special events, which would include adults and children. Our living history field trips occur in the mornings during the work week. Experienced Hearth cooks are preferred, but no experience is needed. Our current hearth cook can provide training. If you love cooking, history, and working with the public, this may be the perfect opportunity for you!
