Volunteer with Refugee Families

Flexible Schedule | Covington, KY 41011

Work with a local resettlement agency to help refugee families rebuild their lives in America. We offer an array of volunteer opportunities that can fit into varying levels of availability and commitment. Welcome refugee families at the airport when they arrive, help prepare homes by cleaning and stocking the pantry, assist with transportation to the grocery store or thrift store, help clients practice their English, or even take part in a mentorship. Welcome a refugee family with your community group!

Take part in KRM's Community Sponsorship Program to mobilize your church, business, community group, or friend group to welcome a refugee family to America. Groups will be paired with a refugee family before they arrive in America. Groups may choose to help with setting up family's apartment, gathering furniture and home supplies, attending the family's arrival at the airport, practicing English with the family, and helping the family navigate their new community by taking them to the thrift store, grocery, and library. Financial and in-kind donations for the family the group works with are appreciated but not required. Orientation, training, and COVID-19 Vaccination is required for all group members.

Help refugees learn English!

Learning English is one of the biggest challenges many refugees face when resettling in the United States. Additionally, it's one of the most important things for them to learn in order to become self-sufficient. While we provide ESL classes to our clients, it is important for our clients to be able to practice speaking in a safe, low stakes environment - that's where you come in! Our English Practice Partner Volunteers meet with clients in their homes on a weekly to bi-weekly basis for a minimum of two months. Volunteers are not expected to teach English, but rather to give their partners the opportunity to practice their own speaking. Volunteers will be equipped with conversation starters, worksheets, and language learning games, activities, and ideas. Volunteers must attend an orientation, complete a background check, and provide proof of a COVID-19 vaccination to be eligible to volunteer.

Youth Mentorship: Mentor refugee young adults

The Youth Mentorship program matches a mentor with a client between the ages of 15-24 for a minimum period of 6 months. After interviewing with the Youth Development Specialist, you will be matched with a refugee mentee with similar interests and skills. You will meet with your mentee weekly to work on the goals they have set for themselves, which may include educational, career, social, and cultural support. Common goals include English conversation practice, computer literacy, college/technical school information, applying for jobs, exploring the resources in Covington and Cincinnati, and learning about American culture through field trips and activities. Mentors are invited to participate in group field trips and events hosted by KRM throughout the year. Experience working with youth or international populations preferred, but all are welcome to apply. Second language not required. Contact spetersen@kyrm.org for questions.

Each refugee welcomed through KRM receives access to comprehensive services to empower them to make Kentucky home. Our Louisville, Lexington, and Northern Kentucky offices operate as a local affiliate of a national resettlement agency, Church World Service.
