Mission Statement

The US Coast Guard Auxiliary, formed in 1939, is a uniformed organization that supports the active duty US Coast Guard and serves the public as unpaid volunteers. Our main mission is boating safety and we also augment the active duty US Coast Guard in many of their missions. Unlike our active duty partners, we cannot be deployed and do not undertake law enforcement activities. The overarching mission of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is to contribute to the safety and security of our citizens, ports, waterways and coastal regions. We balance our missions of Recreational Boating Safety and Coast Guard Support with Maritime Homeland Security and other challenges that emerge as a result of our growing understanding of changes required in the post-9/11 era.

Description

Our Flotilla (114-01-05) is one of three flotillas in San Diego, comprised of over 30 members from all over San Diego County.

The Auxiliary has something for everyone. Our volunteers put in as much time as they like. The more you put in the more rewarding volunteering in the Auxiliary becomes!

Members do not have to own boats or even have an interest in ever being on the water. There are many ways you can volunteer and make a difference. Whether you're interested in public education, public affairs, boating, search and rescue, radio, administrative duties, or just being part of Homeland Security we have something for you.

It takes a commitment (uniform purchase and training), but well worth it. Lots of comradery. Great way to contribute to support the Coast Guard and boater safety.

I looked into volunteering with the Auxiliary out of curiosity, but soon learned that in addition to meeting some smart and interesting people, I found that there's a pretty big menu of various opportunities and paths you can take within the Auxiliary. The Auxiliary has exceeded my expectations and I've found it very rewarding!

I responded to this volunteer match posting and received an email from the Flotilla Commander within 4 days. We talked on the phone for an hour and I was fully briefed in what the commitment would be. It is not for everyone, because you will need to do several training classes prior to being able to contribute, but when you have, the sky is the limit as to what you can do. I trained as a vessel safety examiner, which I’ve found to be very rewarding and the people I have met have been great. I also occasionally write articles and take photos as well as attend other public outreach activities. On Mondays, I work with the active duty coast guard near the airport. The amount of time and effort is totally up to you, but the more you put in the more you will get out. I have since recommended the US Coast Guard Auxiliary to a friend who has applied to join. It is open to everyone over 17 years of age. I have met some wonderful people. I hope to be involved for years to come.
