Position Summary: Lead fun science or craft activities with Museum visitors via an education cart. We have carts with various topics such as minerology, human origins, archaeology, fossils, crafts and more! Carts come with all materials. Responsibilities: Introduce an activity table and encouraging kids or adults to join. Engage with families in a proactive way inviting them to explore the activities, asking questions and interacting with them around the activity or specimens. Offer wayfinding and problem-solving as needed while leading your activity. Represent the Museum in a professional and friendly way at all times. Familiarize yourself with the Museum’s schedule of daily animal shows and other fun family friendly things to do to help answer visitors' questions. Skills Needed: Communication: Able to engage in clear, concise and effective communication to varied audiences; able to empathize with others’ needs and respond sensitively; able to use good judgment when responding to objections successfully. Will communicate immediately with supervisor any issues that arise while volunteering. Initiative: Able to adapt old methods for new uses or seek continuous improvement in procedures. Able to conceive more effective/efficient ways of completing tasks. Professionalism: Able to remain calm and professional through stressful or ambiguous circumstances; able to objectively and calmly interpret information and solve problems. Teamwork: Able to show team spirit and treat team members with cooperation and respect; able to share useful information with team members; able to support and comply with decisions. All volunteer positions require a 3-month commitment. Unless otherwise stated. Volunteers need to complete all training sessions or orientations. BECOMING A VOLUNTEER The minimum age to volunteer is 16. Fingerprinting and/or background check is required for all volunteers. Volunteers can only volunteer a maximum of 20 hours per week. Number of volunteer hours per week/month, days needed: 2-4 hour shifts, once a week, once a month, biweekly, flexible. Volunteers can volunteer every day the Museum is open to the public Tuesday- Sunday 10am-5pm. We especially need volunteer help during weekends, and breaks such as Winter break and Spring break, when the Museum welcomes many more visitors through its doors. Title: Discovery Navigator Summary: Provide professional guidance, ensuring an enriching visit for all. They assist with information, accessibility, and wayfinding, ensuring seamless interactions with the Museum spaces. From access control to personalized visitor support, their number one goal is to enhance our visitor's experience. Responsibilities: Actively engage with visitors helping and helping them navigate the nature of the free lobby space and the paid experience Offer wayfinding and problem solving Familiarize yourself with the Museum’s schedule of daily animal shows and other fun family friendly things to do to help answer visitors' questions. Volunteer shifts are typically 2-4 hours long. We require all our volunteers to use the Museum’ volunteer database system called Better Impact, to sign up for shifts and record their hours. Volunteers can sign up and log hours on the "My Impact’ phone app, the Museum iPad, or on their personal computers. Requirements: A professional, friendly personality to greet the Museum’s guests and guide them through the Museum. Purpose The purpose of the Museum Docent Program is to enhance the visitor experience by providing knowledgeable and engaging guides who can interpret exhibits and artifacts, share the museum's story, and foster a deeper appreciation for our collections. Docents play a crucial role in creating a welcoming atmosphere, facilitating educational experiences, and promoting lifelong learning for all museum visitors. Responsibilities · Lead Educational Activities: To lead educational activities in gallery Learning Labs or in gallery areas using education collection items. · Engage with Visitors: Offer assistance, answer questions, and provide additional context about exhibits and the museum’s mission. · Conduct Guided Tours: Provide engaging and informative tours for various audiences, including school groups, adult visitors, and special interest tours. · Assist with Programs and Events: Support Museum events, lectures, and special programs by guiding tours, assisting with activities, and interacting with visitors. · Maintain Knowledge: Stay informed about current exhibitions, collections, and museum events through ongoing education and training. Requirements · Age Requirement: Participants must be 16 years old to apply for our Docent Program · Interview Process: Selected applicants will undergo a brief interview to assess their interests and suitability for the program. Current Volunteers will skip this step. · Background Check: All participants 16 and over will be required to undergo a background check. Current Volunteers will skip this step. · Attire: Participants must adhere to the museum's dress code, which includes wearing appropriate and professional attire. Closed-toe shoes and long pants are mandatory for select departments. · Availability: Due to the training schedule (see below), docent program training may be limited to three times a year. · Volunteers are to follow the leadership and direction of CMNH staff at all times. Those who fail to comply may be asked to immediately leave our program location(s) and may be restricted from participation in future opportunities. Commitment and Training New docents must complete a comprehensive training program, depending on training availability, including both in-person and online components. Orientation Session: An introductory session covering museum history, visitor services, and volunteer overview. This is provided to all museum volunteers. Athena Training: A 3-level training designed to equip docents with knowledge of Project Athena, scientific literacy, content delivery methods, and effective communication techniques, ensuring docents are well-prepared to engage and educate museum visitors. Exhibit Training: Detailed training on current galleries and exhibitions, including key artifacts and interpretive techniques. Shadowing Opportunities: Observation of experienced docents to learn best practices and develop personal tour styles. Specialty Training: Optional workshops on specific topics such as human origins, fossils, or regional geology, with opportunities to earn badges or certifications. Must attend a minimum of two per year Ongoing Engagement: Participate in meetings, workshops, and continuing education sessions to maintain and enhance knowledge and skills.
