Pigeons make wonderful companions and always surprise humans with their emotional intelligence, capacity for love, and cute antics. If you’re located within 100 miles of Chicago or DeKalb, IL and are interested in fostering or fostering to adopt, we can gladly provide you a loaner cage and initial supplies along with training - no prior bird care experience necessary! Most fosters keep birds until they get adopted or they adopt them themselves! Bird Care/Aviary Cleanup Volunteer

The rescued pigeons at our rescue facility in Maple Park need you! Most of the birds are survivors of the pigeon racing industry that leaves 60% of the birds being "raced" (identifiable by bands on their legs) lost, injured, starving, and dying. We are looking for people who enjoy hard but rewarding work and the satisfaction that comes from watching the birds munch on their fresh seed, bathe in their fresh water and relax in their clean home when your shift is done. Tasks include: Providing fresh food and water Swapping eggs with fake eggs Monitoring bird health Sweeping Power washing trays and floors Washing dishes Assisting with special projects Volunteers less than 16 years old must be accompanied at all times by a parent/guardian/adult. Pigeon Rescue Volunteer

For domestically-raised pigeons being lost is a death sentence in most cases, as they are unable to feed themselves or navigate the dangers the great outdoors present. We receive reports from people who have spotted a pigeon in need. Often it is not very difficult to catch these birds because most are simply too weak to fly or are injured. We have several areas in which we rely on volunteers for help: rescue pigeons pick up or receive pigeons who have already been contained transport contained pigeons to other volunteers overnight pigeons

Bird Care/Rehab Room Volunteer

Our rehab room in Maple Park houses newly rescued pigeons who are going through a medication protocol or are sick or injured. We need volunteers to maintain the room and provide care to the birds. Tasks include: Providing fresh food and water Swapping eggs with fake eggs Changing puppy pads in cages Sweeping Washing dishes Assisting with projects as needed This is a rewarding, pleasant opportunity to help pigeons. Your help is urgently needed! Volunteers less than 16 years old must be accompanied at all times by a parent/guardian/adult. GLPR can provide mileage reimbursement if needed.

Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We are entirely dependent on public donations. We are looking for volunteers to champion our fundraising program! We have a wide variety of ways in which we are in need of help with fundraising, ranging from writing fundraising posts for social media, creating graphics and/or videos for fundraising purposes, grant applications, and identifying and leading new fundraising opportunities (e.g., flyers, email campaigns). To save the lives of homeless domestic and non-releasable pigeons and doves in the Great Lakes region, who otherwise would face euthanasia or a slow death from lack of care, by providing foster homes, adoption services, medical treatment, and compassionate education about the need for pigeon and dove rescue.

To address the absence of rescue and adoption services for pigeons and doves in the Great Lakes region. To enhance awareness of the suitability of rescued pigeons and doves as pets, especially as an alternative to the exotic pet trade. To advocate for pigeons and doves, and in doing so foster compassion for all living creatures.
