We are seeking volunteers to accompany older adults to their medical appointments to reduce anxiety and ensure they get there and back safely. Most appointments do not require a car! Many older adults delay non-emergency medical care when they don’t have someone they trust to go with them. Medical escorts increase vital access to health care, and volunteers get to view the healthcare system from the patient’s perspective. We serve elders living in Boston, Brookline, and Newton. Choose the location that works best for you! To volunteer: please complete a short volunteer application online. https://fw4elders.org/get-involved/volunteer-application.html All appointments are in-person, and volunteers should have at least a 3 hour block of daytime availability during the week, Monday through Friday, and must be 18+. FriendshipWorks was founded in 1984 to help reduce social isolation, enhance the quality of life, and preserve the dignity of older adults in Greater Boston. This work is accomplished by recruiting volunteers of all ages, faiths, and backgrounds who provide friendship, advocacy, education, assistance, and emotional support. Volunteers are critical to helping address the serious health risks posed by social isolation in the elder community.In turn, you are rewarded with new connections, and the satisfaction of assisting someone in need. Do you speak Russian? Get matched with an older adult and help reduce isolation while making a new friend! Visit weekly to share stories, take a walk, or do an activity together. We are currently looking for volunteers interested in being a Friendly Visitor in-person for elders living in Boston, Brookline, Newton, Cambridge, and Somerville. Scheduling is flexible, volunteers must be 18+, and ideally this time commitment would be 9-12 months. Some locations in Newton (not all) may require a car. We are looking for volunteers and their pets to bring comfort and happiness to older people in long term care facilities in Boston, Brookline, or Cambridge. Dogs and cats are matched with a nursing home or assisted living facility to visit in person on a regular (weekly or biweekly) basis. Your pet must love people, be at least 18 months old, and have lived in your home for a minimum of 6 months. We also screen pets using an assessment with an animal behaviorist.
