FriendshipWorks is a great organization. The friendly visiting coordinator (Jennifer DeLorey) is wonderful and pairs you with an elder near you that simply wants companionship. I volunteered with three elders over the past three years. They are lovely people, they just didn't have family nearby and wanted a friend. You organize a weekly visit, where you just enjoy each other's company and chat. One elder requested help with medical treatments/daily tasks which I'd help with during the visit, but it really is more about the companionship provided. Additionally, the volunteer coordinator facilitates the first meeting between you and the elder to make sure it's a good fit! If you're looking for an easy way to get involved in your local community and really impact someone's life, this is it. You'd be surprised how much an hour or two of your time means to someone who typically spends all day alone.
