We have an amazing crew of dedicated volunteers that help maintain our little, organic corner of the park. Wanna see your smiling face here? We’d love to have you! We meet on Friday mornings and you would be committing to no less then two Friday mornings per month for no less then one year. Be sure to bring work clothes, including a hat and gloves, sunscreen, and water. Supervised children are welcome! Feel free to bring your well-behaved dogs too and keep them on leash. The goal of the Garden Steward Position is to help the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation and Forever Balboa Park staff by assisting in routine garden maintenance of more than 20 magnificent gardens within Balboa Park. This volunteer position helps restore and maintain gardens to their historical and botanical glory. Forever Balboa Park proudly partners with The San Diego Floral Association, the Friends of Balboa Park, and The Waterwise Gardener to provide botanical, horticultural, and landscape design experts to lead teams of volunteer Garden Stewards who work together to tend, host and enhance each public garden in the Park. Garden Stewards are asked to make a one-year minimum commitment to work in their assigned area once each week or in some cases once every other week and complete up to 8 hours of training. In efforts to track the return on investment, Garden Stewards are required to track their donated time through Volgistics software. Garden Stewards help with weeding, mulching, planting, dead-heading, and other routine garden maintenance. In some instances, Garden Stewards also serve as garden hosts, greeting visitors and answering their questions, providing a positive presence in the gardens where they are working. Key Responsibilities Monitoring the garden regularly Weed identification and removal/control and mulching Planting container stock and deadheading Perennial & annual flower and grass care Additional garden maintenance deemed appropriate by Parks and Recreation Acting as the eyes and ears for the Park and alerting staff of any maintenance or repairs required, irrigation issues, vandalism, etc., Notifying conservancy staff of need for supplies and tools. The primary role of Tree Stewards is to help monitor young trees in Balboa Park. This will include checking for vandalism of trees, general health conditions of existing trees, soil moisture surrounding new trees, including identifying irrigation needs, and possible infestations. Tree Stewards will also be assigned a tree zone containing roughly 30-40 trees with some exceptions and will check on the trees each month. Additionally, Tree Stewards have the opportunity to participate in regularly scheduled maintenance shifts. Activities and Responsibilities: Monitor newly planted trees in designated Tree Zone using items provided by Balboa Park Conservancy Become familiar with chosen Tree Zone Check each tree within Tree Zone each month using the checklist printed or via the San Diego Tree Tracker in Open Tree Map Act as the eyes and ears of the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department and alert Conservancy staff of concerns in designated zone of the Park. Forever Balboa Park proudly partners with the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department to welcome and inform our Park visitors through our volunteer Park Ambassador program. Park Ambassadors are on the front-line, greeting visitors and offering current information acting as the eyes and ears of the Park. Join our team and you’ll have a great reason to spend more time in beautiful Balboa Park! The Nat Garden Corps is a joint volunteer effort Between Forever Balboa Park and the San Diego Natural History Museum. Have you seen the interpretive gardens around the Natural History Museum? Do you want to spend more time in then helping other enjoy and learn? The NAT Garden Corps is the volunteer position for you! The interpetive garden provides wonderful interpretive opportunities to explore Native Plants to Balboa Park visitors. We need volunteers to run those interpretive programs and volunteers to maintain the garden. As a member of the Nat Garden Corps, you will be trained on both the interpretive and gardening skills. Our training starts this February, so apply today to be a part of this wonderful group of volunteers.
