The Sheltering (SH) Service Associate (SA) is a temporary position assigned to work in person in a Red Cross shelter before, during and/or after a disaster event. Sheltering Service Associates complete tasks necessary for shelter operations and interacts with clients to ensure their needs are met. Sheltering Service Associates support the day-to-day activities within a shelter, which can include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter. Responsibilities vary depending on assignment. May include providing support to one or more of the following areas within the shelter: reception registration dormitory feeding information supply Provide excellent customer service to clients Complete the required virtual self-paced training (3.5 hours of training total) Time Commitment: Regional responses: Shift work determined by the scale of the relief operation; a minimum requirement of 8-12 hours per day during the disaster relief operation for multiple, consecutive days. Beyond Regional responses: 12-14-hour days for extended periods depending on distance. Time and length of commitment will vary by operation. Qualifications: Required: Willing and able to volunteer in person in a disaster shelter before, during and/or after a disaster event. Ability to work in a continuously changing environment in which work priorities may change frequently. Comfortable interacting with people from various diverse background whose lives have been disrupted and many are presenting immediate needs. Comfortable working in a team environment as a frontline worker under the direction of a supervisor Valid Driver’s License (required for Divisional and National Deployments) Minimum 16 years of age Available to sign up for shifts on consecutive days (shifts may be 4, 8 or 12 hours long) Willing to complete 3.5 hours of virtual self-paced training required for position Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions in English Willingness to comply with current public health and Red Cross policies

Recruitment Team Members are needed in Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Isle of Wight County. As a Recruitment Volunteer, you are the face of the Red Cross organization. Without the recruitment team, our communities would not know about the volunteer opportunities that are available. The SR Recruitment Specialist in Coastal Chapter is very flexible in working with volunteers availability. In our busy months, we will usually attend one event a month, normally on weekends in the Spring, Summer and Fall months. Currently, our recruiting is expected to slow down a bit over the holidays. It’s a great time to bring on new team members and get to know everyone and complete some trainings. This is a sample of the work Recruiters do in the Hampton Roads area: We distribute materials (flyers and brochures) throughout the Coastal community at libraries, churches, community centers, coffee shops, etc We use social media and websites such as Volunteer Match and Volunteer Hampton Roads to advertise for open volunteer positions. There are opportunities for virtual work, gathering information about businesses, organizations, churches, etc where we could recruit volunteers. Search the internet for events that Red Cross could participate in. Creating a Recruitment Newsletter. We are also responsible for event planning of Volunteer Open Houses (themed) on a quarterly basis, as well as a Chapter Volunteer Recognition Event in the last Spring. Recruiters bring volunteers to the Red Cross Mission. Volunteers Availability - Distribution of materials and social media activity can be conducted according to your availability. Many recruitment events occur on weeknights and weekends, once or twice a month during peak seasons. Volunteer Recruitment Team will need to be available to assist the Senior Recruitment Specialist in the event of a natural disaster. The purpose of Community Engagement and Partnerships (CEP) is to work with external organizations to build capacity, coordinate activities, integrate expertise and provide channels to reach all disaster-affected communities, particularly traditionally underserved populations. The role of this work is to assist with the implementation of the CEP plan. Engages organizations and groups with their CEP Team according to the service delivery plan. Serves as a liaison to other units within the DRO. Attends NGO and private sector meetings and training sessions in conjunction with the affected area. Promotes regional engagement in community convening and coordination efforts. Supports regional development of holistic effective, diverse and inclusive partnerships. Provides support to multi-agency collaborative efforts and partner activities. Implements Community Engagement (mobilization) and Partnerships Standards and Procedures and job tools (under development). Models’ appropriate behavior and always treats all workers with respect and dignity. Briefs Community Engagement and Partnerships Supervisors on status of community engagement and partnerships activities.
