We are seeking a skilled and proficient individual to fill the role of volunteer Bilingual Translator and Interpreter, specializing in English and Haitian Creole for our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. The volunteer will be responsible for accurately translating short written content from English to Haitian Creole and vice versa, as well as providing occasional interpretation services for verbal communication. The role is remote. Responsibilities: Translation: Translate short written documents, such as reports, questionnaires, emails, and other materials, from English to Haitian Creole and vice versa. Ensure that translated content maintains accuracy, context, and cultural sensitivity. Interpretation: Provide verbal interpretation services, usually during one-on-one meetings, facilitating effective communication between English and Haitian Creole speakers. Maintain clarity and precision in conveying messages in both languages. Cultural Sensitivity: Understand and respect cultural nuances to ensure that translations and interpretations are culturally appropriate and well-received. Communication: Collaborate with other ESOL volunteers team members, clients, and stakeholders to clarify any ambiguities and ensure accurate understanding of the intended message. Quality Assurance: Review and proofread translated content to ensure grammatical correctness and coherence. Flexibility: Be available for occasional translation or interpretation assignments. Scheduling is flexible. Qualifications: Fluency in English and Haitian Creole, both written and spoken. Experience in translation and interpretation. Knowledge of cultural nuances and the ability to navigate linguistic diversity. Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey messages accurately and effectively. Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.

We currently publish a weekly digital piece called The Weekly Word which features faith leaders ’ perspectives on social justice issues, a blog which features stories from our followers about how they put their faith into action, and a weekly spiritual reflection from a faith leader. Our intent is to create space for people of faith to examine social justice issues from a faith-based perspective, and to give voice to faith leaders and individuals who put their faith into action. Position Overview: The Assistant Director of the ESOL Program supports the Director by managing key aspects of program operations, with a focus on community outreach, relationshipbuilding, and operational logistics. This role plays a vital part in ensuring the growth and smooth running of the program while building a network of supportive organizations and partners. The role is remote with occasional in person meetings with potential collaborators. Key Responsibilities: -Teacher and SRM Recruitment and Onboarding: Work with the Director of the ESOL program to recruit volunteer ESOL teachers and Student Relationship Managers (SRMs). Coordinate their onboarding process, including orientation, training, and ensuring they understand the program’s goals and approach. -Prospective Student Recruitment: Design and implement strategies to recruit students for the ESOL program, working with community partners and utilizing various outreach methods to engage those who may benefit from the program. * Communication and Supervision of SRMs: Oversee SRMs to ensure effective communication between students, teachers, and program leadership. Provide ongoing support and supervision to ensure a positive and productive learning environment. -Student Registration and Onboarding: Manage the registration process for new students, ensuring accurate collection of necessary information and effective communication of class schedules, requirements, and expectations. - Coordination with JVS (Program Partner): With the Director, work closely with Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) to ensure alignment on curriculum development, student progress, and teacher support, and to facilitate a productive partnership. - Substitute Teacher Scheduling: Organize substitute teachers as needed to ensure continuity in instruction when regular teachers are unavailable. The role may include the following responsibilities, to be undertaken in close collaboration with the Director of the ESOL program: - Locating Venues for In-Person Classes: Identify and secure suitable locations for inperson ESOL classes, ensuring they are accessible and equipped for learning. - Building Relationships with Referral Organizations: Cultivate relationships with local community organizations, nonprofits, and social service providers to refer prospective students to the AFTDJ ESOL program. Qualifications: A commitment to fostering a spirit of continuous learning, humility, and service, with a willingness to grow alongside the community being served. Strong organizational and communication skills. Experience in community outreach or program management, particularly in educational or nonprofit settings preferred. Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders. Experience working with volunteers, particularly in recruiting and onboarding roles preferred. Knowledge of ESOL programs or adult education preferred, though not required. Location in the greater Boston area. They will teach students to communicate in English with those they encounter in daily living and to use their acquired language to improve their employment opportunities. Why teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)? Use teaching to serve social justice and build your own teaching skills. Help adult learners in vulnerable populations develop the language skills needed to obtain employment and to live successfully in this country. Through its interfaith mission to foster meaningful relationships and build solidarity with immigrants, the ESOL program of A Faith That Does Justice creates an expanded community network for teachers as well as students. Course Description 15 weeks long, two days of 2-hour sessions per week Class sessions occur on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm ET to 8:30pm ET or Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30am ET to 11:30am ET Classes are virtual using Zoom Approximately 10 students grouped by proficiency levels (Beginner & Intermediate) Students are adults Teachers are supported by ESOL Student Relationship Managers (mentors) Teacher Assistant Commitment and Expectations Provide class session assistance to the ESOL Teacher one or two days per week for the entire 15-week cycle Be present and prepared for all sessions Be able to effectively host a Zoom meeting and to use Zoom controls such as chat, screen sharing, break out rooms, etc. Is this right for me? Teacher Assistants should speak English as a native but do not need to be bilingual as classes are taught in English. Prior teaching experience is a plus. Substitute Teachers will be briefed on the lesson plan and expectations for the class session that they will teach.
