Do you love historic events, Victorian mansions, and educating families? If so, we may have an opportunity for you!
This summer and fall (2024), we're offering a variety of ways to help out at Historic Sites - including as a field-trip tour guide, a mansion docent, a craft workshop assistant, an event volunteer, and more.
Our 3 sites are Fosterfields (Morristown NJ), Historic Speedwell (Morristown NJ), & the Cooper Gristmill (Chester NJ).
From April to June, school tour volunteers assist our staff in leading classes through Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, teaching school groups all about the history of farming in 1880s-1920s Morristown. Our tours engage young learners in various hands-on farm chores, such as butter churning, laundry, and corn cracking using antique machinery. Our animals include cows, horses, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, and turkeys.
Aside from school tours, we offer ways to help during special events, such as running craft tables; and workshops, such as assisting our educators with soapmaking, natural dyeing, and open-hearth cooking.
We also provide school tours at Morristown's nearby Historic Speedwell and Chester NJ's Cooper Gristmill.
For those who prefer working behind the scenes, gardening and Collections work is available year round. We also have research and Collections opportunities, where volunteers can help us organize our historic object collection and curate museum exhibits.
Volunteers receive training from our staff, as well as borrowing time-period clothing.
We will work with your schedule. Weekly commitments are appreciated but not required.
Opportunities are suitable for ages 15+. Group volunteer opportunities and internships can also be arranged.
Besides Fosterfields, we also manage Historic Speedwell in Morristown, birthplace of the telegraph; and the Cooper Gristmill in Chester, NJ.
Thank you for your interest and hope to hear from you!
