Are you interested in gardening, working outdoors, or increasing your horticultural knowledge? Come discover our Gardenworks program and get involved with our Horticulture Education and Maintenance teams! Gardenworks volunteers donate their time to work alongside our staff and fellow garden enthusiasts to improve and maintain our public gardens. Our volunteers will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience within specialized gardens and brush up on, or gain new insights, performing tasks such as planting, propagating, pruning, plant identification, and more! Tools will be provided, however, volunteers may bring their own tools if they so, please. Volunteers should come prepared to be in the gardens with closed-toe shoes, long pants, gloves, water, and bug spray/sunscreen. The Gardenworks program offers the opportunity to volunteer at all three of our historic horticulture sites. This program runs as follows: The Frelinghuysen Arboretum: Tuesdays, 9 AM - 12 PM (noon) Willowwood Arboretum: Wednesdays, 9 AM - 12 PM (noon) Bamboo Brook: Thursdays, 9 AM - 12 PM (noon) The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, Cutting Garden: Thursdays, 9 AM - 11 AM (although times may vary) *Gardenworks is now a year-round opportunity for our volunteers. If you are pursuing hours for your Master Gardener certification in Morris County this program will count toward completing your requirements. **Opportunities for scout projects, community, and corporate groups are also available by special arrangement. Those interested should contact Aaron Murray, Horticultural Volunteer Program Specialist, at AMurray@morrisparks.net.

Our Community Programs category strives to provide educational and fun experiences for our community members of all ages! These programs are typically public-facing opportunities that frequently, but not always, involve being mobile while providing program attendees with site and/or horticultural information. Volunteers of this category work as a support for our Education staff by either directly running or assisting with a program or tour or by assisting with set up or organization of programs/events in a more "background" setting. *Opportunities are also available for groups that may want to volunteer or participate in a project related to our Horticultural sites. Interested Volunteers for events need no prior experience!

Do you love historic events, Victorian mansions, and educating families? If so, we may have an opportunity for you! This summer and fall (2024), we're offering a variety of ways to help out at Historic Sites - including as a field-trip tour guide, a mansion docent, a craft workshop assistant, an event volunteer, and more. Our 3 sites are Fosterfields (Morristown NJ), Historic Speedwell (Morristown NJ), & the Cooper Gristmill (Chester NJ). From April to June, school tour volunteers assist our staff in leading classes through Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, teaching school groups all about the history of farming in 1880s-1920s Morristown. Our tours engage young learners in various hands-on farm chores, such as butter churning, laundry, and corn cracking using antique machinery. Our animals include cows, horses, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, and turkeys. Aside from school tours, we offer ways to help during special events, such as running craft tables; and workshops, such as assisting our educators with soapmaking, natural dyeing, and open-hearth cooking. We also provide school tours at Morristown's nearby Historic Speedwell and Chester NJ's Cooper Gristmill. For those who prefer working behind the scenes, gardening and Collections work is available year round. We also have research and Collections opportunities, where volunteers can help us organize our historic object collection and curate museum exhibits. Volunteers receive training from our staff, as well as borrowing time-period clothing. We will work with your schedule. Weekly commitments are appreciated but not required. Opportunities are suitable for ages 15+. Group volunteer opportunities and internships can also be arranged. Besides Fosterfields, we also manage Historic Speedwell in Morristown, birthplace of the telegraph; and the Cooper Gristmill in Chester, NJ. Thank you for your interest and hope to hear from you! -Volunteer coordinator Avital
