Volunteer Position: Thursday Evening Respite (Childcare)

Position Hours: 3 pm to 5:30 pm. 2nd & 4th Saturday of Each Month **We do not require a weekly/monthly commitment. Join us as your schedule allows.

YWCA Mission: to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all
Primary Function: Provide respite support and safe, positive, and nurturing experiences to the children while creating fun craft projects, games, reading stories and much more!
Many of our children have experienced some level of trauma, so it is important to be patient and understanding.
* Volunteers are never alone with the children. There is always a staff supervisor in the same location.
Qualifications:
- Ability to relate to and communicate well with children.
- Crafty and/or enjoy Crafts and games.Demonstrated ability to work well with people of diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrated good communication skills
Responsibilities:
- Supervise and engage children in age-appropriate activities and crafts, reading and storytime, and free gym time while mom takes much needed self-care time, attends appointments, or special self-care events in the Shelter.
- Act as a positive role model, particularly modeling and promoting non-violence and healthy interpersonal behaviors
- Undivided attention to all children at all times
- Safeguard confidential information gained as a result of the volunteer position
Training Requirements:
- General understanding of issues related to racial and gender issues and injustice, equality, equity, and Women’s Rights. YWCA will provide training.
- General understanding of YWCA Shelter Program & YWCA Mission.
Volunteers are not meant to replace staff, but to work beside them and assist where needed.
