Are you 50 or older and looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community?
Join us at ECSC and explore exciting opportunities to make a positive impact in the lives of young children while enhancing your own skills and building new connections.
At ECSC, we empower older adults to train, volunteer, and work in person at Early Childhood Education sites through free virtual training. Never worked with children ages 0-5? No problem! We welcome everyone and encourage you to apply. Our main goal is to facilitate meaningful intergenerational connections between older adults, children, and Early Childhood Education staff. If you're looking for community, exciting new experiences, and are a lifelong learner, this is the perfect opportunity for you!
What You'll Do
ECSC corps members serve in the following roles:
- Classroom Volunteers who assist with activities like reading, crafts, and small-group learning.
- Encore Substitutes who complete our training to become early teacher certified, qualifying them to teach and run classrooms (paid opportunities).
- Volunteer Business Advisors who help childcare centers strengthen their operations and reach their goals.
With over 200 corps members already creating meaningful change, ECSC proves that intergenerational partnerships benefit everyone involved. Children receive the care, consistency, and support they need to thrive, while older adults find renewed purpose, joy, and opportunities for meaningful paid work in their communities.
How It Works
ECSC welcomes new members in both Fall and Spring cohorts. Training for the Fall cohort begins in January, while the Spring cohort starts in August. Our training is completely free, conducted remotely for accessibility and convenience:
- Classroom Volunteers complete 21 hours of training.
- Volunteer Business Advisors complete 7 hours.
- Encore Substitutes seeking to become early teacher certified can earn classroom certification in as little as 2-4 months, depending on prior experience.
Once training is completed we will match with a early childhood education site near you!
Choose Your Path:
Volunteer in the Classroom:
Share your time and talents with children through activities like reading, arts and crafts, and play-based learning.
Encore Substitute (Paid Opportunity):
Want to take your involvement further? With additional free training, you can become an early childhood certified substitute teacher and receive compensation for your work.
Volunteer Business Advisor:
If you're a retired business professional, you can work behind the scenes and use your expertise to help Early Childhood Education Centers with business operations, strategy, and sustainability.
A Program for Everyone:
ECSC is deeply committed to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB). We strive to ensure participants from all backgrounds feel welcome and supported. If resources like computer access are a barrier, let us know-we’ll help remove obstacles so you can fully participate.
How to Get Started
Our next recruitment cycle will begin in April - June with classes beginning in August of 2025.

Mission Statement
Our Mission At ECSC, we are dedicated to bringing older adults into the Early Childhood field, where their experience, wisdom, and compassion can make a lasting difference. We believe that a dedicated corps of trained older adults can help solve the workforce challenges in early childhood education while simultaneously enriching the lives of the volunteers themselves. By joining our service corps, you'll be supporting young children and families, while also enhancing your own mental, physical, and financial well-being. We envision creating a sustainable, community-driven model that recruits, trains, and empowers older adults to provide flexible support in Early Childhood Education. Through this program, we aim to build a vibrant, intergenerational workforce that benefits both the children we serve and the dedicated volunteers who give their time and talents.
Description
The Early Childhood Service Corps is an exciting, intergenerational program designed to address the growing need for support in the Early Childhood field while offering a fulfilling and rewarding experience for older adults. Our program brings together individuals from all walks of life to train, learn, and serve in Early Childhood Education throughout Colorado.
We make it easy to get started with online training and guidance in finding the best fit and opportunity in early childhood education. But it’s not just about training - it's about building a supportive community. Our cohort learning model connects you with other passionate volunteers through classes, group activities, and shared experiences. Along the way, you’ll form meaningful friendships and gain a strong sense of camaraderie.
Whether you’re working directly with children or supporting behind the scenes, we’re here to shepherd you every step of the way as you make a lasting impact in the lives of young learners.
