As a Community Engagement Associate, you will play an active role in connecting with individuals, organisations, and communities across Hackney and Islington. Through a mix of in-person, video, and phone communication, you will engage with community groups, leaders, and residents to understand their perspectives, needs, and aspirations. Your insights will support NGA’s mission to drive positive social change.

You will also facilitate and participate in discussions that promote community building, using techniques such as interviews and focus groups to spark meaningful dialogue and collaboration.

The Community Engagement Associate is a key member of the Research, Identity, and Outreach (RIO) team at Newington Green Alliance (NGA). The RIO team focuses on three main areas:

  1. Research: Conducting studies to build empathy and understanding across social divides, which informs NGA’s initiatives.
  2. Identity Development: Shaping NGA’s public image by crafting a clear, compelling identity that reflects its mission and values.
  3. Outreach and Behaviour Change: Engaging the community through digital campaigns and events that educate, influence behaviours, and encourage positive social change.

Skills and Experience:

  • Communication Skills - You have good verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage with individuals and groups in a variety of formats.

  • Relationship Building - Some experience or an interest in developing relationships with community members and local leaders is valuable, but we also welcome those eager to learn.

  • Facilitation and Engagement - Familiarity with or willingness to learn techniques for leading discussions, interviews, or focus groups to encourage open dialogue.

  • Organisational Skills - Basic organisational skills to manage time, coordinate meetings, and track interactions with various community stakeholders.

  • Technical Skills - Comfort with video conferencing tools, email, and Google Workspace, with support available for those wishing to develop these skills further.

Ability to travel to location of event: Volunteers will need to travel independently to the location of the event. Expenses can be provided in line with our policies.

NGA became a UK registered charity (1190473) in July 2020.

We are an volunteer led organisation with over 40 volunteers and a wide range of projects geared toward building connection and relationship across all the many differences in the Newington Green area of London.

Mission - our purpose: Building strong, sustaining community connections across differences, to better the lives of everyone in the Newington Green and and surrounding areas. REQUIREMENTS

  • Time Commitment: Volunteers are asked to commit to at least six months with NGA, dedicating an average of 3-4 hours per week to community engagement activities and team communication.
  • Remote Work: This role includes some remote working, so volunteers must have reliable access to a stable internet connection. Online Meetings: Volunteers will join regular online meetings to collaborate, share progress, and provide updates
