Role Overview
The Volunteer MarComm Director will lead Surmount’s marketing and communications initiatives, advancing our mission and enhancing our community impact. This individual will collaborate with executive leadership to develop and implement effective strategies for raising awareness, building our brand, and engaging our audience through compelling storytelling and targeted outreach. This volunteer position has a flexible, remote work environment and 10 hours a week.
Reporting to the Executive Director
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning
Develop a comprehensive annual MarComm strategy that aligns with Surmount’s mission, values, and goals.
Lead the planning and execution of campaigns and initiatives that support Surmount’s events, programs, and fundraising efforts, including the 2025 Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive.
Content Creation and Management
Oversee creation and curation of digital and print content, including social media posts, newsletters, press releases, blog articles, and promotional materials.
Manage Surmount’s online presence on social media, websites, and other platforms, ensuring consistent messaging and brand voice.
Public Relations and Media Outreach
Cultivate relationships with media contacts to increase Surmount’s visibility in the community.
Write and distribute press releases, and secure media coverage for key initiatives and events.
Community Engagement
Develop community engagement strategies to strengthen connections with volunteers, donors, and partner organizations.
Lead efforts to grow and engage our digital community, supporting greater awareness and advocacy for Surmount’s mission.
Analytics and Reporting
Track, analyze, and report on MarComm metrics to gauge effectiveness and identify improvement areas.
Provide monthly reports to the Executive Team on campaign performance, audience engagement, and other key metrics.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with a passion for community empowerment and poverty alleviation. They are an experienced MarComm professional, comfortable working in a dynamic, volunteer-run environment and skilled in creating compelling narratives that engage diverse audiences.
Qualifications:
3+ years of experience in marketing, communications, or public relations (nonprofit experience is a plus)
Proven track record of successful campaign development and execution
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in digital marketing tools, social media platforms, and content management systems
Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines
Experience with analytics and reporting tools (e.g., Google Analytics)
