Loon Creek Guard Station - Station Guard

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

Are you ready for a once in a lifetime experience living on the edge of Idaho's Frank Church - River of No Return Wilderness? The Salmon-Challis National Forest is seeking a seasonal station guard for the remote Loon Creek Guard Station. The volunteer will do light maintenance at the guard station, be responsible to clean/maintain a campground down the road, and answer general questions about the area from the public. Volunteers should expect a very isolated lifestyle, with no amenities within a 2.5-hour drive. Directly adjacent to the guard station is an active Guest Ranch operating on private property.

The facility is located approximately 30 miles off a paved highway (1.5-hour drive time), over a narrow, steep gravel road, and includes several buildings, bunkhouses, and a barn. The position will have a two bedroom house to themselves, which includes running water, a flush toilet, shower, wood stove, and full kitchen with all the appliances. There is water and a generator for power. Volunteers should not expect easy access to amenities - the nearest community of Stanley (pop. 100) is approximately two hours away, and the community of Challis (pop. 930) is about 2.5 hours distance.
