Are you ready to apply your machine learning and deep learning expertise to a global cause? The World Disaster Center (WDC) is looking for Machine Learning/Deep Learning Experts to create innovative disaster prediction models for integration into our Michael application. This role will directly support WDC's mission of improving disaster preparedness, response, and recovery worldwide.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Disaster Prediction Modeling: Lead the development of advanced machine learning models that predict various natural and man-made disasters (e.g., earthquakes, floods, wildfires). These models will focus on achieving high accuracy in both temporal and geographic precision.
  • Integration with Michael: Work closely with the tech team to embed these prediction models into WDC’s Michael application, ensuring seamless integration and real-time data processing to aid communities and responders during disasters.
  • NLP Enhancement: Utilize natural language processing (NLP) techniques to improve model predictions by analyzing diverse data sources, including social media, reports, and news articles, ensuring the system captures real-time signals from multiple languages and regions.
  • Human Intelligence & Data Fusion: Integrate human intelligence and crowdsourced data with automated predictions to create a holistic view of impending disasters, improving both accuracy and response times.
  • Innovative Approaches & Testing: Apply innovative deep learning techniques and conduct extensive testing to minimize errors, ensuring high model accuracy and reliability. Focus on reducing false positives and enhancing geographic and temporal precision for real-world disaster applications.

Who We’re Looking For:

  • ML/DL Expertise: You have a strong background in machine learning, deep learning, and time-series forecasting. Experience with frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn is essential.
  • NLP Knowledge: You are experienced in natural language processing and comfortable using NLP models to analyze unstructured data in real-time disaster scenarios.
  • Data Science Skills: You have experience working with large datasets, including geospatial and temporal data, and can apply predictive analytics techniques to forecast disaster events.
  • Problem-Solver: You enjoy troubleshooting and improving models, with a commitment to optimizing accuracy in high-stakes situations.
  • Collaborative: You are a team player who can work closely with developers, data scientists, and other experts to integrate models into a large-scale application like Michael.

Why Volunteer with WDC?

  • Global Impact: Your work will directly contribute to improving disaster predictions, helping vulnerable communities prepare for and respond to disasters more effectively.
  • Cutting-Edge Technology: Join a team that is pushing the boundaries of AI and machine learning in humanitarian settings, developing tools that are crucial for global disaster resilience.
  • Flexible Work Environment: Work remotely on your own schedule, making a real difference while advancing your expertise in disaster prediction technologies.

Time Commitment:

We request a commitment of at least 2-3 months to ensure a rewarding experience for both you and WDC. This approach allows volunteers the flexibility to reassess their commitment after the initial period, without feeling obligated to continue if their circumstances or desires change.

How to Apply:

Please send your resume and a 3-4 sentence email outlining your ML/DL experience to office@worlddisastercenter.org.
