Are you passionate about cutting-edge technology and eager to apply your skills to humanitarian causes? The World Disaster Center (WDC) is looking for dedicated LLM/Chatbot Development Volunteers to assist in building an in-house language model and chatbot system. This solution will support WDC’s Michael application, designed to enhance disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts worldwide.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • LLM/Chatbot Development: Lead the development of an open-source, in-house Large Language Model (LLM) tailored for humanitarian applications. You'll focus on creating an AI-driven chatbot that assists in disaster management by providing real-time, reliable information to communities and responders.
  • Testing & Fine-Tuning: Conduct extensive testing and fine-tuning of the model to ensure minimal hallucinations and high accuracy. You’ll apply rigorous methods to enhance the chatbot's understanding of disaster scenarios, responses, and recovery operations.
  • Collaboration & Integration: Work closely with WDC’s tech team to seamlessly integrate the chatbot into the Michael application, ensuring it aligns with the platform's objectives and enhances user experience.
  • Data Handling & Optimization: Train the LLM using diverse datasets relevant to disaster scenarios, humanitarian operations, and community responses. Continuously refine the model’s performance and optimize it for specific humanitarian settings.
  • Ethical AI Implementation: Ensure that the chatbot adheres to ethical AI principles, with a focus on transparency, fairness, and accuracy in providing life-saving information.

Who We’re Looking For:

  • AI/LLM Expertise: You have experience or educational background in AI, natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, or related fields. Prior experience with LLMs (GPT, BERT, etc.) and chatbot frameworks is a must.
  • Open-Source Knowledge: You’re comfortable working with open-source LLM frameworks and have a strong understanding of how to customize and deploy models for specific use cases.
  • Strong Analytical Skills: You have a passion for ensuring high-quality AI output and can implement methods to reduce hallucinations and improve model accuracy.
  • Problem-Solver: You thrive in a collaborative environment and are motivated to troubleshoot, refine, and enhance AI models in high-stakes humanitarian settings.
  • Commitment to Innovation: You’re enthusiastic about leveraging AI for good and dedicated to ensuring that your work will make a positive, real-world impact in disaster-affected communities.

Why Volunteer with WDC?

  • Global Impact: Your expertise will directly contribute to saving lives by improving disaster management tools used by responders, communities, and governments around the world.
  • Innovative Work: Be part of an ambitious, cutting-edge project, applying AI to humanitarian challenges in new and impactful ways.
  • Flexible Contribution: Work remotely on a schedule that fits you, while still playing a vital role in the global effort to enhance disaster response and recovery.

Time Commitment:

We request a commitment of at least 2-3 months to ensure a rewarding experience for both you and WDC. This approach allows volunteers the flexibility to reassess their commitment after the initial period, without feeling obligated to continue if their circumstances or desires change.

How to Apply:

Please send your resume and a 3-4 sentence email outlining your LLM/Chatbot experience to office@worlddisastercenter.org.
