Make a difference! Members of the Board of Directors are responsible for leadership in this all-volunteer nonprofit organization, with fiduciary responsibilities and strategic, collaborative leadership, and a willingness to put in time and work toward accomplishing goals through taking responsibility for tasks and roles commensurate with their knowledge and experience. We are looking for a few good people who will work with our board as we establish the path for our future and participate in creating great opportunities for positive impact. The Board of Directors is developing a comprehensive approach to public outreach and support for Pinnacles National Park. The Board has business meetings in the evenings 6 times a year, generally via Zoom, with informal board meet-ups over Zoom in alternate months; Board members are expected to attend meetings, actively participate, and follow through on individual commitments inbetween meetings to further a wide variety of projects toward goals. Occasional in-person retreats are scheduled, approximately once a year. It is essential to have interest in Pinnacles National Park, and helpful to have some firsthand knowledge and experience of the Park, or willingness to develop those.

Board members collectively will bring knowledge, experience, and skills to the Board’s work, and a willingness to devote their time, financial, and other resources to developing the Pinnacles National Park Foundation organization and programs so that it can best implement its mission and goals.

All board members are expected to:

· Assume responsibility for ensuring that the PNPF operates ethically and effectively and otherwise ensuring high standards for its governance, fiduciary stewardship, and communications activities

· Engage respectfully and with honesty and integrity with others involved with the Pinnacles National Park and its Foundation

· Attend all regular board meetings, appropriate committee meetings, as well as occasional functions such as special events, where feasible

· Be informed about the organization’s mission, services, policies, and programs

· Review meeting agendae, financial statements, and other supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings

· Make a significant personal contribution to the Pinnacles National Park Foundation (PNPF)

· Actively engage in encouraging others to become interested, members, and contribute to the PNPF

· Seek and suggest appropriate nominees for future board membership

· Keep current on developments related to Pinnacles National Park and the PNPF

· Understand and adhere to PNPF policies, including but not limited to those related to conflicts of interest and confidentiality

Each individual board member is expected to

  • know PNPF’s mission, policies, programs, and needs
  • faithfully read and understand the PNPF’s financial statements; approve PNPF’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; be informed of, and meet all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • work with other PNPF leaders to ensure that board plans are carried out
  • serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the PNPF, represent PNPF to stakeholders, act as an ambassador for PNPF, and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission redundant with some of above, so combine
  • give a meaningful personal financial donation; consider PNPF a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. (So that it can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, PNPF expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make annual contributions commensurate with their capacities.) Replace above statement...this might work as it "meaningful" is weighed by the individual.
  • prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings
  • participate fully in one or more committees or task forces and take on special assignments
  • contribute to an annual performance evaluation for PNPF and its leaders; review outcomes and metrics created by PNPF for evaluating its impact, and regularly measure its performance and effectiveness using those metrics (not sure we are ready for metrics, but support the idea); review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings (redundant)
  • ensure PNPF’s commitment to diverse leadership that reflects the communities PNPF serves
  • follow PNPF bylaws, policies, and board resolutions (redundant)
  • sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings, and recuse from participating in actions related to any conflicts of interest
  • use discretion, maintain confidentiality about internal matters of the organization

Mission Statement

The Pinnacles National Park Foundation exists to support the National Park Service and Pinnacles National Park in serving as a place where visitors of all ages can connect with the natural and cultural resources of Pinnacles National Park and be inspired to join in its stewardship.

Description

The Pinnacles National Park Foundation (PNPF) was founded in 2006 to support Pinnacles’ transition from one of the first National Monuments to a National Park (2013). Located in mountains east of the Salinas Valley, 80 miles southeast of San Jose, the park is known for its unique rock formations, diverse ecosystems, and rare wildlife, including the critically endangered California condor. PNPF was created by community members and environmentalists dedicated to preserving these natural resources.

Our young but growing all-volunteer, nonprofit organization needs people who can help with operations as well as strategy, in roles and areas such as:

  • Board members
  • Vice Chair, Condor Fund
  • Social Media and Website Coordinators
  • Membership Development Coordinator
  • Newsletter Coordinator
  • Events Coordinator
  • Fundraising Strategist and Coordinator
  • Government Relations Coordinator
  • Developing support for the Condor Fund, membership, web presence/social media, newsletter preparation, and other Park and Foundation activities.
