About Us

Awaken Pittsburgh, a non-profit 501(c)(3) formed in 2016, is seeking two new Board members with expertise in either marketing or finance as part of its goal to diversify its Board. Awaken Pittsburgh is a growing, energetic secular organization that draws upon the wisdom of mindfulness and meditation to serve a broad public. Its evidence-based curricula and programming serve students, educators, therapy clients, social services and mental health professionals, corporations, and any other individual or organization seeking to gain clarity, focus, renewal, and improved productivity.

About The Position

Awaken Pittsburgh is seeking an experienced professional to join its Finance committee. Working closely with Awaken Pittsburgh’s Executive Director, Treasurer, and Board, the new Board Member will serve on the finance committee to help oversee the monthly finances of the organization, grant accounting, provide quarterly updates for the board, and support the annual budget, review, 990 and BCO-10 reporting.

About You

  • Knowledge of/connections within the Pittsburgh region.
  • Experience in either finance/accounting/bookkeeping.
  • Familiarity with MonkeyPod, a plus.
  • Previous community engagement or partnership development work is a plus.
  • Able to foster and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including community partners, Executive Director and Board members.
  • Able to think and act strategically with an eye on the "big picture" of a dynamic, future-focused non-profit organization.
  • Comfortable being a public face of Awaken Pittsburgh i.e. at community events and in media interviews if necessary, alongside the Executive Director.
  • Collaborative by nature, placing focus on shared objectives and goals.
  • Embraces cultural, gender and racial diversity.
  • Displays integrity, accessibility and accountability in all actions.
  • Familiar with mindfulness practices, the current science of mindfulness and/or a practitioner of meditation.
  • Passionate about the impact of evidence-based mindfulness practices, especially in education, high-stress professions and underserved populations.

Key Responsibilities

In accordance with Awaken Pittsburgh’s Bylaws, the Board Members shall:

  • Be familiar with the organization’s programs, policies, and operations
  • Attend quarterly board meetings and monthly committee meetings (approximately 2 hours each)
  • Attend and actively participate in the annual meeting (approx. 3 hours)
  • Actively serve on at least one committee(in this case Finance) and take on special assignments
  • Review agenda and supporting documents prior to all meetings
  • Participate in development and marketing of fundraising activities and/or special events
  • Assist in strategizing business development and fundraising plans and activities that assist the organization in meeting its goals and delivering upon its mission
  • Collaborate with other volunteers to coordinate delivery of materials, campaigns and collateral
  • Provide guidance and assist in management of donor and earned revenue development
  • Keep current with your own personal mindfulness or contemplative practice and related issues and developments in program areas
  • Strictly adhere to conflict of interest policies
  • Strictly adhere to confidentiality policies
  • Be familiar with the organization's programs, policies, and operations as well as be able to write new Finance committee organizational policy and procedure
  • Perform monthly and quarterly analysis and report to the Treasurer variances and explanations for fluctuations
  • Assist Treasurer and Finance Committee in accounting for customer and grant revenue transactions under the appropriate accounting standards
  • Assist in quarterly grant review with the Executive Director to determine the appropriate spend in line with the grant restrictions
  • Audit monthly and quarterly financials to propose accounting adjustments in line with organization policies
