Whitewater Falls Site Host

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

Whitewater Falls owes its existence to the Blue Ridge Escarpment, a sharp drop in elevation between the mountains and the Piedmont. With a 411-foot plunge, Upper Whitewater Falls in North Carolina is the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. South Carolina’s Lower Whitewater Falls is another 400 feet. Because of the escarpment’s difficult access and rugged terrain, much of the area receives few visitors and has remained wild and undeveloped over the years. In the cool, moist shade of the steep slopes and rock cliffs, wildflowers and salamanders abound. This wild land is also a perfect haven for a rich array of ferns, mosses and fungi. Enjoy the beauty of blooms and berries throughout the seasons.

Volunteers are responsible for answering questions about the area and sharing directions/information/help when necessary to area visitors. Ideal candidates would enjoy being outdoors and walking up to the waterfall area and around the parking area to talk with visitors and be comfortable with occasional site maintenance. There is a contractor who cleans the restroom facilities, but in between cleanings checking on the restrooms would be appreciated. No housing is provided but the host site can accommodate all sizes of RV with hook-ups. There is not internet at this location and cell phone service is limited.
