Cameroon, a bilingual nation with English and French as its official languages, has encountered profound educational challenges, particularly in the English-speaking regions of the Northwest and Southwest. Since 2016, these regions have been gripped by a crisis rooted in socio-political tensions between the government and separatist groups. This conflict has had a devastating impact on the education sector, resulting in widespread school closures, the destruction of educational infrastructure, and threats to both students and educators. Currently, 596,000 school-age children, including 156,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs), are in urgent need of educational support. The escalating violence and insecurity have further endangered the accessibility and safety of education in these regions.
Key challenges include:
- Insecurity and violence preventing school attendance
- Financial barriers limiting access to education
- Lack of educational resources and infrastructure
- A shortage of qualified teachers
- A high number of out-of-school children
- Psychological trauma affecting both students and teachers
In response to these disruptions, we have taken proactive measures by establishing temporary learning spaces and reopening formal schools in some affected villages. These efforts have enabled over 1,700 internally displaced children to continue their education despite the ongoing conflict. We have also distributed learning materials and provided support to community schools to enhance educational access.
As the new academic year approaches, we are launching a campaign to purchase books and other essential educational materials for these vulnerable children, ensuring they can start school effectively. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to support this crucial project. If you are interested in volunteering for our back-to-school fundraising campaign, we would be thrilled to have your support. Please contact us to join this important initiative, and together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of these children.
