Luminary Hospice is seeking volunteers to sit with patients during their final hours.

In the last hours of life, a hospice patient may be unresponsive but is likely aware of the presence of a friend in the room. Vigil volunteers sit with hospice patients in their final hours and bring an additional level of comfort to them and their loved ones .

What d o es a vigil volunteer do?

Vigil (11th hour) volunteers provide comfort - for the patient as well as family and caregivers - simply by being present . Volunteers may play music or read a patient's favorite poems or scripture, or they may sit quietly beside the patient. The time and loving presence provided by a vigil volunteer is profoundly meaningful to our patients and their families .

What if I don’t have any experience?

Luminary Hospice provides exceptional training for its volunteers. H ospice volunteers receive the same orientation as paid staff in addition to their volunteer-specific training . Our training covers hospice history and basics, as well as special considerations surrounding grief, ethics, and bereavement. Y ou only need to bring a n open heart and a willingness to serve others, and we will train you.

Vigil volunteers provide their availability to the Luminary Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, schedule time(s) convenient for them, and spend as much time as they choose with a patient.
