WHAT WE DO: We offer ESL, GED prep, and Citizenship classes to adult students from around the world. Students who have met residency requirements to apply for citizenship are highly advised to study to prepare for this intense and important interview that affords them the opportunities intrinsic to citizenship. The interview is conducted one-on-one in an office setting and is mostly conversational. Because of this, students benefit enormously from lots of practice with a tutor one-on-one to become accustomed to this format and the questions asked in this unique setting.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:
Citizenship tutors would be asked to offer a minimum of one hour weekly to Zoom sessions with a student. Tutors would shadow existing tutors several times before they were in contact with a student due to the complex nature of this application.

During your tutoring session, you would help the student work on the aspects of the application they most want help on, acting as the "agent."

Citizenship Classroom Assistants would join online classes dedicated to studying for the citizenship interview. Teachers would prepare lessons that Citizenship Classroom Assistants would help implement. Classes are 9-11am and 6-8pm, both on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursday. You could assist in one or more classes per week for the duration/remainder of a 13 week trimester - and beyond, if you so choose.

Citizenship volunteers MUST be sympathetic to supporting refugee and immigrant students in this vulnerable move toward a challenging goal. Emotional intelligence, a clear, encouraging manner of engaging with students, and ideally, some understanding of trauma informed care, is essential to this position. Volunteers WILL NOT assist in the completion of citizenship applications due to sensitive legal concerns.

Mission Statement

Navigation of Community Resources, Mentoring, Tutoring, Substance Use Prevention and Youth Leadership.

Description

Aurora Youth Options (AYO) is the youth prevention team of Aurora Mental Health & Recovery. AYO works with middle and high-school-aged youth and their families, helping young people gain life skills and confidence for personal success and happiness. AYO assesses each individual youth to determine what resources would be best, offer support and make the connection.

Referrals include mentoring, existing community resources, pro-social activities or enhancing life skill-building.

Nearly half the young people between the ages of 10 and 18 live in challenging situations that put them at risk of not living up to their potential. They need a listening ear and gentle guidance that can turn a negative situation into a life lesson.

Our staff, volunteers, and mentors nurture and help young people grow their personal and professional skills leading to greater happiness and a better outlook as they come into adulthood
